Treatment Action Campaign

Treatment Action Campaign TAC campaigns for the rights and health of people living with HIV/AIDS in South Africa and globally.

The Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) was founded in December 1998 to campaign for access to AIDS treatment. It is widely acknowledged as one of the most important civil society organisations active on AIDS in the developing world. Today the TAC continues to represent users of the public healthcare system in South Africa, and to campaign and litigate on critical issues related to the quality of and access to healthcare.

TAC strongly condemns the decision by the US government to phase out health funding to South Africa. The HIV epidemic has taught us a painful lesson: when political decisions undermine access to healthcare, people die. The gains achieved through decades of activism, scientific progress, and public investment must not be sacrificed.

Today TAC turns 27.

Over the years we have had many victories – and this should be celebrated.

But the struggle is not over... We must keep on fighting. We must fight and fight until the bitter end.

Since the early days, TAC has been committed to teaching the science and treatment of HIV. It became one of our strongest tools in mobilising the masses to demand treatment.

Today, TAC’s flagship treatment literacy programme remains key to our model of highly informed grassroots activism.

Going door to door, mobilising in communities, and carrying out health talks at clinics are all ways to ensure that people are informed about how and why they should adhere to ARVs if they are living with HIV – or how to prevent getting HIV if they aren’t.

As we finish up for 2025, here’s a recap on the TAC members carrying out this important work through the year...

09/12/2025

In February 2025, the government announced plans to get 1.1 million more people living with HIV on – or back on – treatment. This was in response to South Africa falling far behind global targets to ensure 95% of people diagnosed with HIV are on ARVs.

TAC has been supporting the “Close the Gap” campaign in communities across the country. Our teams brought thousands of people back to facilities to help them start or restart their ARVs.

But if the health department doesn’t fix conditions at the clinic that made people avoid going in the first place – how long until the people who have been found stop going back? We are mopping up, but we haven’t switched off the tap.

Check out our latest Ritshidze report released on World AIDS Day that reveals the state of our HIV response and the failures in the health system that cause people to stop treatment.
