In the Youth American Flag Football League’s first preseason game, the Eldorado Park Lions won 31 to 12 against the Harlequins at the Benoni Northerns Sports Club in an intensely contested match. Both teams demonstrated remarkable skill and sportsmanship throughout.

On Wednesday, we welcomed special guests to our practice: representatives of the Ghana American Football Federation.
This federation partners with Gridiron South Africa to promote the growth of American Flag Football and American Football across the African continent.

The visit to our practice occurred as a result of our partnership with Gridiron South Africa. It served as an opportunity to highlight the current state of Flag Football in South Africa and also to showcase the work of Project Pick Six.
Our time both on and off the field was truly remarkable, and the kids had an awesome experience.

On February 24th, the Eldorado Park Lions will face off against the Harlequins in an American Flag Football preseason/friendly game for players aged 15 and younger.

This match will be one of many, as Gridiron South Africa, in collaboration with Project Pick Six, initiates the Youth American Flag Football League. This league, the first of its kind in Southern Africa, will not only foster healthy competition but also serve as a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills, determination, and teamwork. The league will kick off within the next two months with approximately four teams participating in the inaugural season.

In October 2023, we launched Project Pick Six with the establishment of the first Flag Football Team: the Eldorado Park Lions. Eldorado Park is a suburb located to the southwest of Johannesburg, South Africa. The Eldorado Park Lions stand as the inaugural team within this project, comprising more than twenty male students from the seventh grade at Boekenhout Primary School. For now, we deliberately chose to work exclusively with seventh-grade students, recognizing them as one of the groups most at risk within the community. These students have a few remaining weeks in primary school before transitioning to high schools at the beginning of next year. This transition poses new challenges and problems, and we aim to support and guide the youth through this critical period and beyond that. Our on-field sessions, where we play Flag Football, and off-field sessions, where we provide academic support and address various needs, currently taking place on the school's premises.🦁🏈
