The Masibuyele Wilderness Trail is for traditional healers who wish to gain a deeper understanding of the origins of their calling and its connection to the natural environment. Through this journey, which reconnects them with nature as it is often revealed in visions and dreams, they return to their daily lives moved and inspired to practise their healing with intentional stewardship of the natural environment that roots indigenous healing — not only for themselves, but for generations to come.

The wilderness is a healer. At its core, this journey is one of healing, where Abelaphi heal themselves and their lineage, and embrace the role of stewardship over this natural environment, which has always been ours.

Watch how the cohort of the 3rd Masibuyele Wilderness Trail experienced seven days of walking in Africa’s oldest game reserve.

Meet abelaphi for the 3rd NHA Masibuyele Wilderness Trail which took place from the 21st - 27th of June 2026.

Before they set off on their wilderness journey of discovery, Janet Frangs, experienced and qualified wildlife guide shared some powerful insights on what the journey entails and what they will experience.

"As we go on this journey you must understand that we are leaving everything that we do not need behind. If you take it, you will need to carry it. Over the next few days, we will be going back to our original selves, going back to simplicity to connect with the cycles (sunrise, sunset), eating when hungry and sleeping when we are tired."

"We are leaving behind the trappings of everyday life behind. Drinking from rivers, walking on animal paths and taking our guide by what shows up."

Little did our healers know that they were about to experience something more than what they had anticipated.

Co-founder of the Natural Heritage Alliance and traditional healer, Makhosi Gcabashe describes the Masibuyele Wilderness Trail:

"This is a unique opportunity for people to disconnect and reconnect with themselves. They get to disconnect from the outside things they carry within themselves that create a disconnect with their internal voice. The trail forces you to reconnect with what is within you. It's a re-awekening and that is why we called this Masibuyele - a journey back to self and nature."

"Through this journey, we hope that our traditional healers begin to understand that they are the custodians of nature and the environment."

The 3rd annual Masibuyele Wilderness Trail took place from the 21st - 27th of June where 8 traditional healers were taken on a once in a lifetime journey to experience nature and reconnect with their most natural self.

Hosted at the oldest game reserve in Africa, Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park, expertly led by qualified and experienced nature guides from the Wilderness Leadership School, this 7 day journey is a complete digital detox and an opportunity for healers to learn more about medicinal plants, wildlife, sustainable use and how they can also become advocates for conservation of our natural resources.

Co-founded by Makhosi Amanda Gcabashe and the Natural Heritage Alliance, The Natural Heritage Alliance (NHA) is a purpose-driven movement, amplifying historically marginalised voices in conservation and biodiversity. Their mandate is to advocate for the transformation of South Africa’s wildlife and conservation sector by empowering communities, women, traditional healers, local leaders and other like-minded individuals and groups to reclaim their rightful place as custodians of nature.

A trip down memory lane to our inaugural NHA Masibuyele Wilderness Trail in 2023. Makhosi Amanda Gcabashe had a vision of creating a platform to transform, capacitate and reconnect Traditional Healers (Abelaphi) with nature.

The founding principals and objectives were to rebuild the healers ancestral and cultural connection to the environment. This would assist in recognising the voices of Traditional Healers as valid and build a network of environmentally and conservation focused community of practitioners.

We are excited to see that this vision has come to life and the Wilderness trail will once again be taking place from the 21st - 27th June 2026.

Applications are open and traditional healers who want to learn more about their connection to nature are encouraged to apply. This opportunity is limited to 8x traditional healers and they will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis.

🌍 World Biodiversity Day | 22 May 🌿

This year’s theme reminds us: “Be part of the Plan.” At the Natural Heritage Alliance, we believe everyone deserves a voice in protecting our biodiversity - especially those historically left out.

From traditional healers and rural communities to women, youth, and people with disabilities, we’re creating space for new voices in South Africa’s conservation story. 🛖👣🌱

Let’s shift the narrative from exclusion to stewardship - together.
