Learning sign language remains one of the key steps to communicating more effectively with our Deaf and Hard-of- Hearing children. That is why access to information and promotion of sign language as a medium of communication remains one of our core organizational focus areas.

South African Sign Language is the country’s 12th official language, yet access in public services remains inconsistent. True inclusion doesn’t end with recognition — it requires action. From schools and hospitals to government offices and workplaces, accessibility, interpreter availability, and awareness must become the standard, not the exception.

Progress is growing through collaboration, with efforts emerging across sectors to address these gaps — but there is still much to be done. Even as individuals, we all have a role to play: learning basic signs, advocating for inclusive spaces, supporting Deaf creators, and challenging environments that exclude. Accessibility isn’t just policy — it’s daily practice. Inclusion begins with us.

Did you know?

Fewer than 40% of Deaf learners in South Africa complete Grade 12, according to a 2024 Equal Education report highlighted in a 2025 University of Pretoria Faculty of Humanities article. The report points to language barriers, limited access to SASL-fluent teachers, and inadequate classroom support as key challenges affecting learning outcomes.

Many Deaf learners are still taught by educators who are not fluent in South African Sign Language, making it difficult to fully access lessons and participate meaningfully in class. When learners cannot access education in their primary language, learning becomes a barrier rather than an opportunity.

Access to language is access to learning. Because when Deaf learners are taught in a language they fully understand, they don’t just attend school — they thrive.
