Today I trained the team from Hotto Restaurant in Addis Ababa, formal dining setup and synchronised service—the level of detail and teamwork required when welcoming Presidents, Ambassadors, Ministers and other distinguished guests.

At this level of hospitality, great service is not simply about serving food. It is about timing, precision, anticipation, confidence, deportment and seamless teamwork.

When every member of the team moves as one, the guest should never see the effort behind the experience—only the excellence.

Proud to be back at Hotto for my fifth training visit and to see this team continually striving to raise their standards. 🇪🇹

Luxury Butler Standard: The Art of Unpacking a Guest’s Suitcase

Luxury is found in the details. A professionally unpacked suitcase should never simply be organised—it should be returned to the guest exactly as they remember it.

Best Practice Standards:

* Before removing any items, take a photograph of each layer of clothing. This allows you to repack the suitcase in exactly the same order when the guest departs, creating a seamless and thoughtful experience.
* Always wear clean white gloves when handling a guest’s personal belongings to demonstrate professionalism and respect.
* Wherever possible, separate delicate garments using acid-free tissue paper to protect fabrics and minimise creasing.
* Once the suitcase has been repacked, weigh the luggage for the guest. This small but valuable gesture helps prevent overweight baggage charges and reduces stress at airport check-in.
* When repacking, place the laundry bag, vanity bag and any medical bag at the top of the suitcase so they are immediately accessible when the guest opens their luggage.

These seemingly small details distinguish exceptional butlers from ordinary service professionals. True luxury is anticipating needs, respecting personal belongings, and ensuring the guest’s journey is as effortless on departure as it was on arrival.

Remember the language to use when you want to offer them another bottle or another beer or any alcoholic beverage, we NEVER use the words “more” or “another” as this can imply we are counting the quests drinks or the guest thinks they are drinking to much, so instead us the words, “May l refresh your drink, sir or Ma am?”

Words create experiences. In luxury hospitality, how we speak is just as important as what we do. Professional verbiage builds trust, confidence, and genuine connections with guests. It transforms an ordinary interaction into a memorable experience.

At The British Butler Institute, we teach our students the language of a true professional. By replacing everyday slang with polished, respectful, and guest-focused language, hospitality professionals communicate with greater confidence and grace.

Instead of saying:

* “No problem.” → “It’s my pleasure.”
* “I don’t know.” → “Allow me to find that information for you.”
* “You need to…” → “May I kindly suggest…”
* “Wait a minute.” → “Thank you for your patience; I’ll be with you shortly.”
Instead of would you like ANOTHER or MORE wine or any alcoholic beverage, you say “May I refresh your drink, sir or ma am.”

Professional verbiage helps staff:
