The glass we walk on feels like stone,Until the sudden fracture shows. We watch the shadows overtakeA neighbour’s house, a stranger’s street,And whisper of the choice they made,To make our own illusion sweet. We build our walls of quiet pride,And lock the heavy doors tight,Convinced the storm will turn aside,And only claim the dark of night. We say not me, not now, not here,As if a wish could stay the handOf sudden wind or shifting sand. But dust obeys no human crown,And rivers rise without a word. The highest towers tumble down; The silent pleas go quite unheard. No lock can keep the world away,No fortune buys a static sky;The brightest sun must yield to grey,The proudest river will run dry.Yet in the breaking of the spell,A deeper freedom is revealed. To know that we are fragile too,Is how the hardened heart is healed. We guard the hours we are given,We hold our loved ones closer still,No longer watching from above,But walking softly down the hill.
