Free Market Foundation South Africa

Free Market Foundation South Africa Promoting individual liberty, private property, free enterprise, and limited government since 1975.

One of the most important objectives of this page is education. We are able, through Facebook, to reach many people who otherwise would not be exposed to the Free Market Foundation's ideas and the principles of free market economics. We welcome and encourage debate on the page, and hope for this to be a forum where ideas are shared in an atmosphere of respect and good faith, without the n

eed for heavy handed moderation. The ideas and principles promoted by the FMF and our friends for more than 30 years in South Africa can certainly survive even the toughest scrutiny by anyone who is interested in debating them. Although we would like this forum to be as open and accessible as possible to anyone who has been interested enough to "Like" this page, the critical message we are trying to convey will quickly be lost if we allow behaviour and posts that are not made in good faith. For purposes of this page we define "good faith" debate as that which:

- Takes into account that the Free Market Foundation's page has been created to promote the benefits of free markets.
- At the very least shows that the poster has an interest in honestly debating the issues at hand.
- Is not simply attempting to deride free market ideas without any substantiation or logical argument.
- Shows that the poster / writer has actually read or viewed the article / video they are commenting on.
- Is not an ad-hominem attack.
- Does not use profanity. In the interests of those who are genuinely seeking information on liberty and economic freedom we will unfortunately have no option but to ban anyone from participating further who does not in our judgement conduct debate in good faith and is simply “trolling” this page.

Should South Africa introduce a wealth tax?

South Africans already pay capital gains tax, estate duty, transfer duty, securities transfer tax, and property rates, alongside some of the highest personal income tax rates in the developing world.

FMF Policy Officer Zakhele Mthembu joined SAfmRadio to explain why another wealth tax would drive away investment, discourage entrepreneurship, and ultimately leave South Africans poorer.

Trade should reward innovation and enterprise, not political compliance.

A new proposal linked to AGOA offers an opportunity to challenge race-based regulations while advancing free markets, non-racialism, and economic freedom, writes FMF CEO David Ansara.

WATCH: Johannesburg is broke. Here's how to fix it.

The City of Johannesburg is facing a financial crisis, failing infrastructure, rising tariffs, and poor service delivery.

FMF Policy Officer Zakhele Mthembu explains why bigger government isn't the answer, and how fiscal responsibility, lower tariffs, and greater private sector involvement could help put Johannesburg back on track.

The Free Market Foundation has submitted its detailed comments on the draft Prevention of Illegal Eviction from and Unlawful Occupation of Land Amendment Bill, 2026 to the Department of Human Settlements.

While the FMF welcomes new provisions targeting those who organise and incite illegal land occupations, it argues that the Bill still falls short of providing adequate protection for property owners and strengthening property rights.

Should politicians have the power to take your property?

The biggest risk isn't who holds power today. It's who might hold it tomorrow.

FMF Rule of Law Project member Mark Oppenheimer explains why expropriation powers should never depend on political discretion, and why vague laws create opportunities for abuse by future governments, municipalities, and political factions.
