Nobody sees the extra few minutes
I sit in the car
before I go inside.

Nobody sees me talking to you
out loud
when I'm alone in the house.

Nobody sees me checking your old messages
just to hear how you used to talk.

The way you said my name.
The way you texted "ok" like it annoyed you.
The dumb stuff.
The ordinary stuff.

That's the stuff I go back to.

People would call that unhealthy.
Stuck.
A sign I need to move on.

They don't get to decide that.

Those messages are mine.
The minutes in the car are mine.
Talking to you when no one's listening
is mine.

I don't owe anyone an explanation
for how I keep you close.

If sitting in my car for five extra minutes
is what gets me through the door....

I'm sitting in the car.

If reading your old texts
is what gets me through the night...

I'm reading them.

Nobody else has to understand it.

It's not for them.

It was never for them.

Nobody gets to put a timer on your grief.

Nobody gets to decide
how long you're allowed to miss someone.

Not your family.
Not your friends.
Not the people who stopped asking
a long time ago.

You can talk about them every single day.
You can post about them every single day.
You can say their name
until people get uncomfortable.

Let them get uncomfortable...

You didn't get a choice
when they left.

You don't owe anyone silence
about the people you love.

The world will tell you
it's been long enough.
That you should be moving on.
That it's time.

There is no time.
There is no enough.

There is just you.
And the love that didn't go anywhere
when they did.

So keep posting.
Keep talking.
Keep saying their name.

Not because you're stuck.

Because they mattered.
And they still do.

Grief is not something you get over.

Let me say that again.

You do not get over it.

You don't take something for it.
You don't sleep it off.
You don't push through it
and come out the other side fixed.

There is no being fixed.

There is just the day you lost them.
And every single day after that.

And some of those days are okay.
And some of those days
it hits you like it just happened.

Like the air got knocked out of you
all over again.
In the middle of a regular Wednesday.
For no reason at all.

That's not a setback.
That's not a sign that something is wrong with you.

That's grief.

And grief doesn't have an end date
because love doesn't have an end date.

You're not stuck.
You're not broken.
You're not doing it wrong.

You're just someone
who loved somebody
that much.

And that doesn't go away.

It was never supposed to.

“Grief never truly leaves us
But neither does love. Over time, the sharp edges soften, and we begin to see that our loss is also a reminder of how deeply we were blessed to love and be loved. Though life feels different now, the bond we carry remains unbreakable, guiding us, comforting us, and reminding us that love is forever.”

Stephy’s Place is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Red Bank, NJ, that provides free support groups and mindful meditation for anyone grieving the loss of a loved one. Every service is offered completely free of charge, as the center relies on charitable donations.

Nobody told you that grief had a sound.

That it lives in a song that comes on in the middle of a store.
In a laugh that sounds just like theirs.
In a notification that still says their name.

Nobody told you that you'd have to mute the world
just to get through a Wednesday.

Not a holiday.
Not an anniversary.
A Wednesday.

Grief doesn't wait for a significant day.
It shows up in the ordinary ones.
The ones with no reason.
The ones where you're just trying to get through.

And you do.
You get through it.
But nobody sees that part.

They only check on you in the beginning.
After that you're just supposed to be okay.

You're not okay...
And that's not weakness.

That's love with nowhere to go.
