Faces of Impact | Meet Agnes, Powerhouse Food Center Braamfontein
In the heart of Braamfontein stands our anchor soup kitchen, a place of consistency, care, and community. Led by the fearless and ever-present Agnes, every morning from 5:30 AM to 6:30 AM, this dedicated team serves over 300 people, six days a week ensuring that no one starts their day without a warm meal.
Powerhouse Feeding Center is more than a soup kitchen. Alongside its morning feeding programme, the team runs a street-cleaning initiative that helps keep the surrounding area cleaner and more dignified — a living example of what a cared-for city centre can look like.
In the wake of COVID-19’s lasting impact, the need has grown. Many who once had stable employment, including parents with children, now join the early morning queues. Yet, in the midst of hardship, something powerful remains: dignity in service.
Every meal includes a steaming cup of tea or coffee and a balanced, nutritious plate. And perhaps most powerfully, the community itself participates with individuals who once came for help now choosing to stay and serve. Agnes continues to show up and make a real difference where it matters most.
