Proven Technical Agility: Why Dylan’s d-lab Journey is the Blueprint for Your Next Hire.

"I started knowing almost nothing. What matters is your willingness to learn, stay consistent, and push yourself outside of your comfort zone. The programme can truly change your direction if you allow it to." - Dylan Nkomo, d-lab Alumnus.

Before joining d-lab in Diepsloot, Dylan was upgrading his matric results, unsure of his next steps. Today, he is a tech leader, having served as an ICT Head Facilitator and IT Manager, even co-leading Python bootcamps at Amazon Web Services!

David Kramer, Co-Director of d-lab, recalls Dylan’s incredible transformation:
"Dylan arrived as the youngest member of the cohort… so shy he could barely look at us. He’s now transformed. He’s confident, articulate, and his job is now training other young people. He’s not the same person anymore."

Dylan’s Journey at a Glance:
• 2022: Completed d-lab Diepsloot (Gauteng).
• The Start: Began by assembling computers and managing equipment.
• The Growth: Promoted to ICT Facilitator, then Head Facilitator.
• The Peak: Stepped into IT Management and Coding instruction.

Dylan’s story is a testament to what happens when we reimagine digital skills development. By providing the right environment, we don't just teach coding; we build the confidence to lead.

Real Impact: From ECD Intern to Project Professional at the Zenex Foundation

We are incredibly proud to share this testimonial from Thabisile Zuma at Zenex! Thabisile speaks to the professional shift inspired by the d-lab journey and the absolute joy of working with one of our d-lab graduates, Karabo Sithole.

Karabo’s journey is a true d-lab success story. Before joining us, Karabo was an ECD intern at Penreach. After completing her d-lab training last February, she traded the classroom for the corporate office, landing a Project and Administration position at the Zenex Foundation.

By mastering Google Workspace, project organisation, and professional communication, Karabo didn't just find a job - she found a new career path.

Karabo’s message to those considering the program:

"If you are thinking about joining d-lab, I would say: go for it. The programme gives you real skills that employers want. d-lab changed the path I was on. It can do the same for you if you are willing to work hard and learn."

Consider a d-lab graduate for your next internship or entry-level role and bring future-ready skills into your organisation today.

Stop recruiting for the "perfect answer" and start looking for "shining eyes."

In our latest article, Ayanda Orrai, Programme Manager at d-lab, explores why d-lab is moving away from traditional, polished recruitment to a model that prioritises potential over performance.

The truth is, being good at an interview isn't the same as being good at solving real-world problems. When we recruit only for what’s visible on a CV, we miss what’s possible.

Our multi-phase approach focuses on:
• Curiosity and Mindset: Looking for the energy that shows up even when a candidate is unsure.
• Thinking Over Memorisation: Designing tasks that reveal how someone approaches a problem, not just if they solve it.
• Collaboration: Using group environments to see how candidates support others and adapt.
• The Power of "I Want to Try": Finding the quiet determination in those who are ready to grow.

Recruiting for potential is messier and takes more time, but it opens doors for the brilliant candidates traditional systems often overlook.

As work continues to change, the real advantage isn't just what you know; it's how you think.

Read the full piece her, https://d-lab.co.za/why-we-recruit-for-shining-eyes-instead-of-perfect-answers/, to see how we’re rethinking recruitment as an experience, not just a filter.

Young unemployed people in South Africa don’t lack potential. They lack access to the right skills and networks.

At d-lab, we equip South African youth with digital capability, design thinking and workplace readiness. Learning is practical and project-based. Participants build portfolios, tackle real industry challenges and grow in confidence.

AI sits at the core of how we train. Not as a trend, but as a tool for thinking, creating and working better. As AI reshapes every sector, our learners are trained to use it with purpose and responsibility to get great work done.

Participants apply AI to real problems, automate tasks, improve workflows and strengthen decision-making.

The result? Young people fully equipped with AI skills, entering their first job with trepidation and humility, yes, but also the confidence of knowing they can add measurable business value from day one.

We’re expanding our AI-enabled programmes and deepening industry partnerships.

If you’re an employer, funder or collaborator, work with us to embed AI-capable young talent into your teams.

Partner with d-lab to strengthen your future workforce.

We are buzzing with excitement as we head to Mpumalanga to celebrate the graduation of our latest cohort, taking place tomorrow.

These incredible students have spent months mastering digital literacy, design thinking, and AI - transforming from learners into assets ready to tackle the modern economy. Seeing them reach this milestone is a powerful reminder of why we do what we do.

Here is a inspirational story from Prieska Mofokeng, one of the students we will be celebrating:

''The first day I walked into the d-lab program, my heart was filled with mixed emotions. I was nervous, excited, and afraid all at the same time. I kept asking myself, “What if I don’t make it? What if I’m not good enough?” The workload felt heavy and draining, and everything seemed overwhelming. I had just met new strangers, not knowing that they would later become the people I would learn and grow with.

But somewhere in the middle of all that pressure, I found growth.

About a month in, I stopped seeing the workload as stress and started seeing it as transformation. I realised that the things I thought I knew especially about AI and technology were only the basics. d-lab didn’t just teach me how to use tools; it taught me how to think differently, how to solve problems, how to create with purpose, and how to believe in my own ideas.

As time went by, I began to manage the pressure. I pushed myself, even on the days I felt tired and overwhelmed. Slowly but surely, I started getting ahead.

Today, I am not the same person who walked in on that first day. I’ve started my own business creating posters and flyers - something I never imagined I would have the confidence to do before.

d-lab challenged me. It stretched me. It humbled me. But most importantly, it showed me what I am capable of.

And as we graduate, I’m not just proud of what I learned — I’m proud that I didn’t give up.''

Today, we are celebrating the incredible journey of Simanye Mdunyelwa, a 2024 d-lab graduate whose story perfectly illustrates the bridge between learning and leadership.

Before joining d-lab hosted in partnership with the Inkcubeko Youth and Science Centre (near George in the Western Cape), Simanye was searching for a pathway to grow.

Her journey is a testament to the power of the d-lab ecosystem:
✅ Completion: Graduated from d-lab’s 6 month live, online programme in 2024.
✅ Experience: Was placed by d-lab into a 3-month internship, at Inkcubeko, so that the rubber could meet the road (real world real skills)
✅ Growth: Was given the opportunity to progress into a 12-month Technolab Intern role, sharpening her technical and facilitation expertise.
✅ Impact: Today, Simanye is thriving as an ECD Facilitator, at Inkcubeko, supporting and shaping the lives of young learners.

By mastering problem-solving, design thinking, and communication, Simanye has moved from being a student to being a pillar of her community.

When asked what advice she has for those following in her footsteps, Simanye shared:
"I would encourage anyone considering the programme to take the opportunity seriously and fully engage in the learning process. d-lab not only teaches technical skills but also builds confidence, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities that can open unexpected career opportunities."

Simanye, we are so proud to have been part of your journey. We can’t wait to see the impact you continue to make!

From Pilot Student to Powerhouse: Siphumezo’s Journey

What does true empowerment look like? For Siphumezo Adam, it started with curiosity, a leap of faith, and a lot of courage.

In 2022, Siphumezo joined the d-lab pilot cohort as a young person eager to find her way in the professional world. Today, she isn’t just an alumna - she is a key staff member helping lead the very space that helped her grow.

Why you should read her story:
The "Light-Bulb" Moment: Discover how Siphumezo moved from the classroom to presenting at major institutions, turning fear into agency.

Beyond the Certificate: Learn why access to tools is only half the battle- it’s the exposure and the "inner work" that truly build a leader.

From Beneficiary to Builder: Hear how she transitioned from student to mentor, now helping the next generation navigate the spaces she once found unreachable.

Siphumezo’s journey is a beautiful reminder that when we invest in young people, we don't just fill jobs - we create the future builders of our society.
