LANCASHIRE STEEL FC: THE CHIMBI-CHIMBI BOYS WHO HUMBLED GIANTS DYNAMOS FC
By John Mutsengi
Lancashire Steel FC, fondly remembered as the Chimbi‑Chimbi Boys, carved a unique place in Zimbabwean football history. Based in Kwekwe, the team embodied resilience and flair, often punching above their weight against the country’s giants.
Their most famous triumph came in May 1995, when they stunned Dynamos FC with a 6‑3 victory in the Premier Soccer League. This remains one of Dynamos’ rare defeats in which they conceded more than five goals locally. In fact, Dynamos has only twice suffered such heavy defeats—once internationally against Société Sportive Saint‑Louisienne, who beat them 7‑2 in the CAF Champions League in October 1999, and later a 6‑0 drubbing in April 2012, their heaviest continental loss. Lancashire Steel’s six‑goal feat thus stands as a historic marker of their attacking brilliance.
The Chimbi‑Chimbi Boys also lifted the inaugural BP Cup, defeating Caps United 2‑1 in a memorable final. These achievements showcased their tactical discipline and fearless spirit, inspiring smaller clubs across Zimbabwe.
Though financial challenges eventually led to the club’s collapse, Lancashire Steel’s legacy endures. Their victories remind fans that passion and determination can topple giants, and their story remains a proud chapter in Zimbabwe’s football heritage.
