Plumbing & Electrical Practicals: Out of the Classroom, Onto a Real Geyser

This week our Plumbing and Electrical learners left the classroom and worked on real geysers on site. They put on hi-vis vests and overalls, tested the wiring with a multimeter and checked the valves and fittings, with their instructors beside them.

Outside, the group gathered around a geyser element while the instructor explained how it heats the water and what to check when it fails.

Women are training in these trades too. In the photos, one of them is holding the multimeter leads to the geyser connections.

Dawah Training: How Do You Answer a Colleague Who Asks About Islam?

Yesterday’s Dawah session in the library put participants in a workplace scenario. A colleague asks why Muslims pray, and the questions keep coming. The group worked through how to answer calmly and clearly.

Three things guide our Dawah work. We teach people the answers before they are asked. We want every participant to leave surer of their own faith. And we speak about Islam the way Allah taught us: “Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good counsel” (Qur’an 16:125). That means being patient with a hard question, kind to the person asking it, and honest when we do not know.

O Allah, accept the effort of everyone who taught and learned yesterday. Grant us beneficial knowledge, soften our words and our hearts, and let us represent Your religion with the best of manners. Ameen.

Four Classes, One Week at the Skills Development Centre

In the electrical class, a learner worked on a wall socket with a tester and pliers while a classmate watched. In plumbing, the instructor stood beside a sink and a geyser to show how they are fitted. In the sewing room, learners sat at their Kingstar machines working through patterns. In the kitchen, mixing bowls were full of flour and eggs, and the class was baking.

Electrical, plumbing, sewing and baking: all four are running now.

📖 Dawah Class in the Library

Notebooks open, the instructor at the whiteboard, and shelves of books all around the room. This is where our Dawah class meets.

Participants come to learn more about Islam, ask their questions and talk them through with the group.

🍋 Lemon and Blueberry Cake on the Menu

In our latest Cooking & Baking class, the recipe went up on the whiteboard first: dry ingredients, then the lemon and the blueberries. Then the learners tied on their aprons, put on hairnets, pulled their red mixing bowls closer and made it themselves.

The kitchen at the Al-Iman Skills Development Academy has its own ovens and a wall of kitchen safety posters, so learners practise food preparation properly from day one.

Learning the Art of Sewing

At the Al Iman Skills Development Academy, our Sewing & Garment Construction class runs on industrial machines, not hobby ones. Learners sit at Kingstar and Madi machines, working seam by seam under the eye of an instructor who moves table to table, adjusting a stitch here, checking a hem there.

The shelves behind them are stacked with fabric rolls and sample folders from past projects. On the wall, photos from a previous graduation are pinned up next to the health and safety notices, a reminder of where this training leads.
