RIP - Tinus Smit

I'm saddened to share that Tinus Smit passed away earlier this morning. He experienced a severe stroke on 5 August and has been in and out of hospital for the last 10 weeks. Tinus served on SACIA’s volunteer leadership team for more than a decade. He served as SACIA board chair from 2023 to 2025, and also served two terms as chair of our Broadcast Industry Group.

A soundman at heart, he received his core training at the SABC while starting at the television division of the South African Air Force (SAATV). There, he received thorough grounding in technical directing and vision mixing for multi-cam events, linear editing (yes, on tape), VT operations, lighting, camera work, location sound, live audio, and audio post, earning him a reputation as a multi-skilled operator. He’s worked on feature films, series, documentaries, corporates, live gala events, game shows, reality shows, and – in short – just about every stressful situation imaginable to a broadcast engineer or producer.

Tinus is survived by his wife Carina, son TJ and daughters Lucia and Tavia.

Promoting a "safety-first" culture in the events industry across Africa

Across Africa, various Acts, Regulations, Standards and Bylaws require every event to appoint a competent person to act as an event safety officer to ensure the safety of staff, performers and spectators.

Nice article in the latest issue of Meetings magazine that introduces new members of the SACIA Board. Lisa Welthagen is elected Board chair, with Aldred Dreyer serving as vice-chair. New board members are Iain Fourie, Angelique Smith and Jack Devnarain and they join Tinus Smit, and Sharif Baker with Kevan Jones as Executive Director.
