Last week Friday, on World Environment Day, we had the honour of being part of an unforgettable environmental awareness and action-based campaign at Germiston South Primary! Captain Fanplastic and Afrox partnered with us to make it all happen. Through storytelling, experiential learning and practical action, these amazing kids learned about waste, recycling, responsible consumption and environmental stewardship. They played a recycling relay to learn the different types of waste, planted trees and brought the most infectious energy throughout! Thank you Captain Fanplastic and Afrox for involving us. Together we are making a real difference! 🌍

Albertville Stream, this was our first time meeting you, and it won’t be the last 🌍

Last week, the Hlanzekile team partnered with local residents to clean up the Albertville stream, tackling a space heavily impacted by illegal dumping. From household waste to textiles, it’s clear that this stream has been under pressure for a long time.

But we didn’t stop at just removing waste. We conducted a mini SASS (South African Scoring System) assessment to understand the health of the water — and what we found tells an important story.

Blood worms, mayflies, and true fly larvae were present. While some of these species can tolerate polluted conditions, others, like mayflies, are more sensitive and signal that the ecosystem still holds signs of life and potential recovery. It’s a reminder that even in stressed environments, nature is still trying to survive.

This Earth Day, we’re reminded that protecting our waterways isn’t just about what we take out, but what we protect within them. Every cleanup is a step towards restoring balance.

This past weekend, Hlanzekile River and Ocean Cleaning split into two teams to clean two sites simultaneously, maximising our reach where it’s needed most. One team headed to Melville Koppies, where in collaboration with the Wits Aquatic Lab, we collected an incredible 278kg of waste from the environment, while the second team worked along the Albertville Stream.

A significant portion of the waste collected at Melville Koppies was textile waste, likely swept into the river system by the recent heavy rains. It’s a stark reminder of how quickly pollution travels and why consistent, collective action matters.

Every bag collected is a step closer to restoring our ecosystems. 💧

Over the December holidays, we turned environmental action into an opportunity for young minds to lead ♻️

Learners from Grades 4–7 in Mzimhlophe took part in our stationery competition, collecting plastic waste for a chance to win stationery vouchers worth R500, R1 000 and R1 500.

Congratulations to our winners:
🥉 Sabelo Chauke (Grade 4)– 3rd place
🥈 Owami Nxumalo (Grade 4) – 2nd place
🥇 Karabo Kekana (Grade 4) – 1st place

Beyond the prizes, this initiative is about planting the seed early, teaching our children that caring for the environment starts with them, and that even small actions can make a big difference. When we empower young people today, we grow responsible environmental stewards for tomorrow. 🌍

Hlanzekile is a CSI Legacy Awards 2026 Finalist! 🌍

We’re incredibly proud to announce that Hlanzekile has been selected as a finalist in the Best Green Initiative category at the CSI Legacy Awards 2026, chosen from 390 nominations across the country. 💙

This recognition is an honour and a powerful reminder of why we do what we do: to restore our rivers, create opportunities, and leave a legacy of environmental impact for generations to come. Being acknowledged alongside so many inspiring organisations means the world to us.

Keep an eye out, we’ll be sharing a special feature in the coming weeks! 👀

Flashback to last weekend at our Soweto cleanup! 🌍

Despite the rain, our incredible volunteers came out in numbers to help us beautify the Kliprivier once again. Together, we collected 101 bags of waste and reminded ourselves that real change happens when a community comes together. 💙

As Helen Keller said: ‘Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.’ Thank you to everyone who braved the weather and made a difference with us! ”

Soweto, it’s time to roll up our sleeves and take action for a cleaner, healthier community.

Join us for our Soweto Cleanup on Saturday, 1 November, at the corner of Mokhele and Mophiring Street in Orlando West.

From 8:00 am to 12:00 pm, we’ll be removing waste from the area, sorting the waste into categories, and weighing collected materials to track our impact. This is more than a cleanup; it’s a movement to protect our environment and build community pride.

Please be sure to wear comfortable clothing, boots, gloves, a hat, and sunscreen.

Sign up to volunteer by scanning the QR code on the poster or using the link in our bio.
