Menstrual Health Equity Bill | This Is What Menstrual Health Equity Looks Like 🩸 📚 ✊

We are honoured to share with you the first-ever proposed Menstrual Health Equity Bill. The Bill is informed by the imaginative activism undertaken by our members in June 2024, first presented to Parliament in November 2024, formally launched on 26 May 2025 at our Menstrual Health Equity Summit hosted at the Nelson Mandela Foundation, and further strengthened through the inputs and endorsements of organisations collectively representing more than 2 million citizens across South Africa.

We remain deeply humbled by the credible organisations, unions, and institutions of learning including schools, many with far longer histories of advancing human rights and shaping South Africa’s political landscape, that have submitted thoughtful amendments and endorsed this Bill. Their contributions reflect the diversity of citizens, sectors and thematic expertise that this Bill seeks to serve.

In case you missed our presentation to Parliament of the Republic of South Africa, we made a point of acknowledging each of you and the important role you play in strengthening our democracy and ensuring good governance.

The Cost of Menstrual Health Equity in South Africa | Proof that menstrual health equity is affordable and achievable 🩸 📚 ✊

On 1 April 2026, we stood inside the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa to present a study that changes the terms of the national conversation on menstrual health.

Titled “The Cost of Menstrual Health Equity in South Africa: Estimating Free Access to Menstrual Pads and Expanding Product Choice for Girls, Women and All People Who Menstruate,” this costing study does more than present numbers. It answers the question many decision-makers ask: Can South Africa afford to provide free menstrual products? The findings shows that we can.

Developed in partnership with the Health Economics and Epidemiology Research Office (HE²RO) at the University of the Witwatersrand, the costing study was handed over together with the proposed Menstrual Health Equity Bill and a phased implementation plan shaped by endorsements from organisations representing over two million citizens.

This moment represents years of organising, research, consultation, drafting, and coalition building to show that menstrual health is not a side issue. It is a matter of dignity, health, education and economic justice that can be implemented within existing systems through coordination, intention and political will.

Gratitude to Dr Lise Jamieson, Nozipho Orykah Musakwa, advisory partner Joey Hasson, and our Founder Tracey Malawana for leading this work and contributing new knowledge to the field of menstrual health.

Menstrual Health Equity is achievable and affordable! Menstrual Dignity is possible in our lifetime!

Menstrual Health Colloquium | Listen, we have no words to explain this moment here. These are some of the faces that engaged in imaginary activism in 2024 which gave birth to the first proposed Menstrual Health Equity Bill which we published in November 2024 and launched in May 2025. The final proposed Menstrual Health Equity Bill which is endorsed by organisations representing 2+ million citizens was presented by our Founder Tracey Malawana alongside our school-going members Tshegofatso Mabilane (16) from Thembisa, Gauteng and Asenathi Mpisane (16) from Gugulethu, Western Cape. We demand the introduction of the Menstrual Health Equity Bill which is backed by evidence, to ensure that all girls, women and people who menstruate do so with dignity, safety and proper support. 🩸📚✊🏾
