Today marks 70 years since the 1956 Women’s March in South Africa. We honour this day of women’s formidable contributions, anti-colonial struggle, and revolutionary act by drawing on the words of Dr. Lebohang Liepollo Pheko, shared at the “S’obashaya Ngamatye: Women and 60 Years of Armed Struggle in South Africa” Colloquium in 2021.

The colloquium was organised by the Political and International Studies Department at Rhodes University, the Centre for Women and Gender Studies at Nelson Mandela University, and the Historical Studies Department at the University of Cape Town.

Dr. Pheko’s framing could well have been said today: “Afrikan liberation is still written without examining the extensive and complex layers of women’s contributions” and “It is extremely important to repoliticise and recentre this day as a day of revolutionary insurrection.”

Youth in struggle: 14 years since Marikana, 50 years since 1976

On Saturday, 15 August 2026, SERI and The Forge will co-host a commemorative event bringing together music and critical reflection on the connections across the 1976 student uprising, the 2012 strike and massacre; and contemporary student protests.

The event will focus specifically on:

· The lived experience of the Marikana families and continued lack of state of accountability 14 years on;

· The connections between Marikana and contemporary youth struggles;

· The continuum of state violence in 1976, 2012 and subsequent protests;

· The significance of the Mthokozisi Ntumba street renaming.
