The 2nd African Forum on Urban Forests confirmed that inclusive urban greening is a matter of justice, health and survival. How we plan for green spaces and urban forests must address systemic injustice so we can ensure that all city residents can access the health and well-being benefits of urban greening.

If urban forests and green spaces are to contribute to the building of resilient, healthy and equitable African Cities they require the knowledge and expertise of a diverse network of stakeholders, including public space users, city practitioners, urban planners, architects, designers, researchers and academics, students, traditional healers, youth, policy makers, activists, artists, community organisers and government.
If you are passionate about , join our growing network and help bridge the gap between action, policy, culture and lived experience.

A Message of Gratitude from the CAPS Convener
Thank you for believing in the possibility of an African-centred approach to our cities and landscapes.

A special, heartfelt thank you for helping us ensure that the 2nd regional African Forum on Urban Forests was a resounding success. Yes, it was indeed a resounding success. Not just because of the rich content or the robust and diverse participation from over 35 African countries, but because it was grounded in the deep spirit of ubuntu that quietly held every aspect of the gathering.

As we look ahead to the amazing initiatives we have planned for 2026, we carry the warmth of your solidarity and the strength of our collective vision. Thank you for continuing to believe in what we are building together.

Data and evidence-based research is essential to accurately and effectively inform policy and direct action. Based on the success and popularity of the hands-on learning session, CAPS hosted an online repeat of the practical AFUF session titled: Mapping and Monitoring Urban Forests: Open-Access Solutions for Climate Resilience and Green Equity in African Cities.

Gain practical skills to map and monitor urban forests using open-source geospatial tools.

With thanks to the Urban Municipal Development Fund (UMDF) of the African Development Bank Group (AfDB), for funding support to host this webinar and make the recording available to all.

Women and youth, particularly in informal settlements are disproportionately impacted by climate disasters. If we are to build a resilient and inclusive Africa, empowering women is both a moral imperative and a strategic priority.

We are grateful to the Absa Group who, in recognising the critical intersection of gender equity and environmental sustainability, sponsored a cocktail reception aimed at fostering connections and strengthening networks between women leaders. The event report includes the results of an Absa-led survey investigating the needs and challenges facing women working in climate-related fields.

The final day of action in communities across the City of Johannesburg included collective tree-planting, a Green Careers Expo and a site visit to a community project that exemplifies a collaborative nature-based approach to river rehabilitation. Informative presentations from the City of Johannesburg showcased the role that municipalities can play in supporting community research, education, health and recreation as well as the promotion and conservation of urban biodiversity.

Municipal greening programmes can and should play a vital role in promoting safe and healthy communities. To be effective they must be founded on evidence and understanding of local realities. And, they require teamwork. Successful greening programmes grow and benefit from cross-sectoral collaboration between landscapers, scientists, city officials, civil society, corporate citizens and scholars.

The calls for research covered topics from better understanding community needs to mapping urban tree canopies to determine what trees already exist in our cities. It included the request to work closely with scientists and traditional healers to identify trees that match the climates of our cities and the health needs of urban citizens.

Inclusivity, informality, equitable access and environmental justice were key themes emerging from .

The roundtable discussion on equitable access to green spaces underlined the importance of recognising informality in African cities, acknowledging how the inclusion of all players from youth and artists to traditional healers is essential if we wish to heal the disconnect between planning and usage of urban spaces.

In his keynote presentation Dr Msizi Myeza (Council for the Built Environment) argued that planning must begin with understanding the needs of people who are going to be using public green spaces.

Are you working in urban planning? Do you have lived-experience of how urban planning has included or excluded your participation in public spaces? Become a CAPS member and initiate or participate in action-oriented conversations geared at achieving inclusive and sustainable, green urban development.

Across the continent, the benefits of green spaces are unequally distributed. This inequity is in part the result of the persistence of colonial and apartheid legacies and, our current failure to include green infrastructure in urban planning.

The round table discussion on Day 2 underlined the importance of recognising informality in African cities, acknowledging how community-led practices and informal settlements interact with green spaces in transformative ways, and how the inclusion of all players from youth and artists to traditional healers is essential if we wish to heal the disconnect between planning and usage of urban spaces.

Urban forests and green spaces can improve the overall health of a city and should form part of a preventive approach to the health of city inhabitants. The focus of Day 2 considered the impressive contributions of green spaces on urban health and well-being and critically examined who has access to these benefits, investigating strategies to ensure all city residents can access the benefits of green spaces.
