The approved electricity tariff increase places additional pressure on households and small businesses already navigating a rising cost of living. While improvements in energy stability are important, affordability must remain central to South Africa’s energy future, with stronger protections for vulnerable communities and a just, transparent transition.

As the March 31 deadline for the SANDF deployment looms, we must face the uncomfortable truth that camouflage is not a cure for corruption. Recent revelations from the Madlanga Commission have exposed a police service where senior officials allegedly take loans from the very cartels they are meant to dismantle. Deploying soldiers to stabilize communities while the intelligence they rely on remains structurally compromised is a performative distraction. We are effectively asking the military to guard a hen house where the foxes have already been given the keys and a badge. It is time to stop the militarized PR and start the painful work of cleaning the house from the inside out because a soldier’s rifle can never do the work of a crooked cop’s conscience.

South Africa’s latest Q3 crime statistics reveal a complex dual reality where percentages are falling but absolute numbers remain heavy. While a nearly nine percent drop in murders and a reduction in trio crimes show that strategic policing might be gaining ground, the loss of over six thousand lives in three months reminds us of the work still required.
