Two Occupational Therapy students from Wits University recently visited the REEA Hostel as part of their practical studies.

Third-year students Skye Sutherland-Clark and Faith Chirwa had the opportunity to put some of what they have been learning at university into practice, while spending time with our residents.

Faith spent time in the kitchen teaching residents how to make bread and flapjacks, while Skye worked with residents making keyrings. These activities were not only fun, but also helped to develop and practise fine motor skills, coordination and concentration.

It was lovely to see the students engaging with our residents and putting their studies into a real-life setting. We look forward to welcoming them back to REEA.

A Little Stitching Fun at REEA

As part of her practical work at REEA, Kiara Madhav, an Honours student in Neuropsychology at the University of the Witwatersrand, has been spending time with the residents at the REEA Hostel over the past few months, sharing her knowledge and introducing them to a variety of activities.

One of the recent sessions was a fun embroidery class, where residents explored different shapes and patterns, including stars, houses and bows.

It was a relaxed and creative session, with plenty of concentration and enjoyment as the residents worked on their embroidery and proudly showed off their creations.

We look forward to seeing what comes next from Kiara's ongoing work with our residents.

Our wonderful customers have been keeping us busy, and we’ve had a fantastic run on books lately. Thank you!

Now we need to replenish our shelves, so we’re appealing for donations of pre-loved books.

All genres are welcome, but we are particularly looking for fiction.

If you have books you’ve enjoyed and are ready to pass on, please consider donating them to the REEA Charity Bookshop. Every book gets a new chance to be discovered by another reader.

Please see the poster for our opening times and donation drop-off location.

Thank you for your continued support.

As Mandela Month comes to an end, there's still time to make a difference.

If you're doing your grocery shopping this week, would you consider adding one or two extra items for the residents of the REEA Hostel?

A tin of baked beans. A bag of rice. Cooking oil. Tea, coffee or a few toiletries. They may seem like small things, but together they make a real difference to the people who call REEA home.

Every donation, no matter how big or small, helps us provide comfort, dignity and care for our residents.

If you've been meaning to support our July Wish List, we'd be so grateful if you could drop off a donation before 31 July.

Thank you to everyone who has already donated. Your kindness and generosity mean so much to our residents.

Meet the Team Keeping Things Running Smoothly

If you've visited the REEA Complex in Marlborough Avenue, Craighall Park, you've almost certainly been greeted by some familiar faces in high-visibility vests.

Pictured here are Robert Killian, Sagan Pakkiri and Hendrik Pitzer, three of our hostel residents who proudly assist with parking and car guarding Monday to Saturday. Their friendly smiles and willingness to help have become a familiar part of life at REEA.

Leading the team is Hendrik, who is passionate about ensuring everyone who visits our premises feels safe and secure. Together with Robert, Sagan and other residents, they direct vehicles, assist visitors with parking and keep a watchful eye over the grounds throughout the day.

On our popular sale days, when visitor numbers increase significantly, Hendrik is quick to bring in extra reinforcements. The team works together to keep traffic flowing smoothly and ensure that every visitor receives a warm welcome.

For our residents, this role is about far more than parking assistance. It provides an opportunity to take responsibility, contribute to the community, build confidence and develop valuable workplace skills while interacting with the many people who visit us each week.

The next time you visit the REEA Complex, be sure to say hello to Hendrik, Robert and Sagan. They are an important part of the REEA family, and we are incredibly proud of the work they do every day.
