As we mark Workers’ Day, we are reminded that decent work is about far more than income; it is one of the most powerful tools we have to fight crime and corruption.
Unemployment, especially among young people, fuels desperation, weakens social cohesion, and creates fertile ground for criminal activity. Jobs, by contrast, restore dignity, create hope, and strengthen communities. When people have opportunities to work, build skills, and support their families, crime loses its appeal and corruption its grip.
A safer South Africa depends on an economy that is growing, inclusive, and able to create sustainable employment.
