The organization was originally founded in 1957 as The Instrument and Control Society of Southern Africa. The name was later changed to the SAIMC to incorporate developments in the industry. The Society was registered with the AS & TS in 1962. The name was further changed in 2009 at a Special General Meeting with unanimous approval to “The Society for Automation, Instrumentation, Measurement and Control" to embody the international nature of the Society.
