Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging. Ikebana translates as "Living Flowers" and is an expression of communion between the arranger and nature.

Ikebana is a disciplined art form in which nature and humanity are brought together. Ikebana emphasizes other areas of the plant, such as its stems and leaves, and puts emphasis on shape, line, and form. Though Ikebana is an expression of creativity, certain rules govern its form. The artist's intention behind each arrangement is shown through colour combinations, natural shapes, graceful lines, and the implied meaning of the arrangement.

🌺What an Incredible Weekend of Living Sculpture! 🌳
Our joint Ikebana & Bonsai Exhibition was held over the weekend at The Floreum (Emmarentia, Johannesburg Botanical Gardens).
For two days, visitors immersed themselves in the harmonious blend of traditional Japanese art forms, featuring exquisite floral arrangements by our Ikebana Johannesburg Chapter alongside the breathtaking, meticulously cultivated bonsai trees by Shibui Bonsai Kai.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who visited, shared in our passion, and supported our community of living sculpture. Your enthusiasm, curiosity, and appreciation for Japanese artistry made this weekend truly unforgettable.

Honouring Our Heroines Through Ikebana
This past Saturday, our August gathering brought together the expressive art of Ikebana and a deeply personal tribute for Women’s Month in South Africa.
To honour the extraordinary courage, resilience, and strength of the women who have shaped our nation and our individual lives, our members each chose a special South African heroine to inspire them.
Members shared a brief, 1 to 2-minute reflection celebrating anti-apartheid icons, pioneers in science and the arts, and unsung local heroes whose legacies continue to inspire.
Using the art of Ikebana, everyone translated the spirit, character, and story of their chosen heroine into a stunning floral arrangement.
Through thoughtful use of form, colour, texture, and negative space, bold indigenous materials captured unyielding strength, while graceful lines reflected quiet resilience.
It was a truly touching morning of storytelling, creativity, and shared appreciation for the remarkable women who paved the way. Thank you to everyone who shared a piece of their heart and art with us! 💛

Ikebana Gift Wrapped: Christmas in July at our Johannesburg Chapter🎄✨
Our July meeting brought a festive twist as we embraced the "Christmas in July" spirit, but with a unique structural twist: replacing traditional vases with gift bags. 🎁
It was a fantastic exercise in "structural partnership," teaching us to look beyond the surface and focus on:
* Geometric harmony with the container’s lines.
* Seamless transitions at the rim (the "line of emergence").
* The power of Ma, finding the perfect balance of negative space within the confines of the gift bag.
Our winter materials in the colour pallet of red, white & green truly came to life, transforming simple bags into beautiful, living landscapes. Thank you to everyone who joined us for this morning of creative play and mindfulness.

This past weekend, our Chapter took a deep dive into the technical and aesthetic challenges of working in a Suiban without the assistance of a Kenzan.
Moving beyond traditional pin-holders allows us to reconnect with the core principles of Ikebana. Finding stability through clever construction, tension, and the natural characteristics of our materials. It was a fantastic exercise in patience and precision, reminding us all that sometimes the most beautiful arrangements are those that rely on the thoughtful interplay between branch and vessel.
It was inspiring to see how everyone navigated the challenge to create such serene and balanced displays.

It was such a joy to head over to Menlyn Main this past weekend to support the Ikebana Pretoria chapter at the Japanese Festival. The members put together an absolutely stunning exhibition, so much creativity and skill on display. I especially enjoyed the demonstration on Sunday. Congrats and well done to everyone involved in making this event a success! 🌸✨

Our chapter held its Annual General Meeting this past Saturday, marking a productive start to our new term.

Cultural Spotlight: Kōdō (香道) "The Way of Incense"
Following the business portion of our meeting, members were treated to a fascinating immersion into Kōdō, the traditional Japanese art of "listening" to incense.
Unlike simply smelling a fragrance, Kōdō is a meditative practice that requires total presence and mindfulness. We enjoyed a short documentary that provided historical context and beauty to this ancient art form, helping us understand the refined discipline required to appreciate the subtle complexities of various woods and aromas.

The highlight of the morning was participating in Kumiko, a traditional incense game. This interactive experience allowed members to practice "listening" to the fragrance, challenging our senses and encouraging a deeper appreciation for the interplay between scent and spirit. It was a wonderful way to connect with the philosophy behind Japanese aesthetics, which resonates so deeply with our own practice of Ikebana.

Our recent Ikebana meeting was a beautiful tribute to Earth Day. As practitioners of this ancient art we have a unique connection to the natural world and this theme allowed us to explore that bond even more deeply.
From using foraged branches to highlighting the vibrant colours of the season, our members truly captured the spirit of conservation and appreciation for the Earth. It was inspiring to see how each artist interpreted the theme, reminding us all of the vital role nature plays in our art and our lives.
Ikebana isn't just about arranging flowers it’s about listening to nature and finding harmony in the world around us.
