40 suspected undocumented immigrants arrested in overnight operation

Authorities reportedly arrested 40 people suspected of being undocumented immigrants during an overnight operation in eQonce, Eastern Cape.

The operation was aimed at checking people's immigration status and dealing with people who may be in South Africa without the required legal documents. Those arrested will go through the proper legal and immigration process to determine their status

The UN should also acknowledge the frustrations that are driving these tensions instead of focusing only on condemning South Africans. Illegal immigration, pressure on jobs and services, crime and failures in immigration enforcement are real concerns that governments must address. Violence and racism should never be tolerated, but neither should legitimate concerns about immigration simply be labelled xenophobia. The UN should encourage both stronger protection of migrants and stronger enforcement of immigration laws. They must know that South Africans are not xenophobic.

At a construction site in Sunninghill, Johannesburg, officials found almost 90 undocumented foreign nationals during a big inspection.

The inspection was led by Deputy Employment and Labour Minister Jomo Sibiya and Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero. Officials were checking whether the construction company was following South Africa’s labour laws. They found several problems, including issues with minimum wages, unemployment insurance, workers’ compensation and workplace safety.

Officials went to check whether the construction site was following the law. They found almost 90 undocumented migrants working there, as well as several problems with labour laws. The authorities are now taking action against the violations they found.

South Africa belongs to everyone who lives here not undocumented ones. If Phakela wants to go to Soweto, Limpopo or the Eastern Cape, he has the right to do so. No single person or tribe owns these places.

For us , Soweto belongs to South Africans, not to one tribe or one individual. Nhlanhla Lux does not own Soweto, and he cannot decide who is allowed to go there.

We also believe we must be careful not to repeat the mistakes of the past, where people were defended even when serious questions were raised about them.

“Phakelumthakathi and Nhlanhla Lux reportedly clashed during an operation targeting undocumented foreign nationals in Braamfisher, Soweto, on Wednesday. The confrontation allegedly escalated after Lux told Phakelumthakathi that he could not come to Soweto and tell residents what to do, reportedly insisting that Soweto is under his leadership and telling him to return to Nongoma. The incident has sparked debate over growing tensions between groups involved in such operations.”

The SIU told Parliament that some foreign students allegedly got South African study visas using false information. They listed colleges or universities that did not exist or were not properly registered.

When their study visas expired, some of these students allegedly changed to tourist visas to remain in South Africa, while others stayed without valid visas, meaning they became undocumented.

Some people allegedly used fake or unregistered schools to get study visas, and after their visas expired, some found other ways to stay while others remained in South Africa illegally.
