At Casa Serena the Persepio was a complete success. Federica and Monica delivered outstanding work—precision, heart, and energy from start to finish. The kids absolutely loved it, especially the many Veneti who were glowing with pride.

A Casa Serena il Persepio è stato un successo completo. Federica e Monica hanno fatto un lavoro eccezionale—precisione, cuore ed energia dall’inizio alla fine. I bambini lo hanno adorato, soprattutto i molti Veneti che erano pieni di orgoglio.

After the battle of Sidi El Barrani (December 1940), British forces suddenly had to manage thousands of Italian POWs. To keep them safely away from the front, they were shipped from Suez to Durban and sent across South Africa, then a British Commonwealth state whose prime minister, Jan Smuts, had narrowly rejected neutrality.

The largest camp was Zonderwater - Afrikaans for “without water” - near Johannesburg, in a barren valley by the Cullinan diamond mines. The first 10 000 prisoners arrived in 1941 from Ethiopia and Eritrea, sleeping in tents and facing hunger and harsh treatment.

Under Colonel Hendrik Frederik Prinsloo, himself once a Boer War internee, the camp became a small city of 14 blocks, holding over 100,000 men with roads, theatres, schools and hospitals. Despite relative freedom inside the fences, many suffered psychologically; 252 died and are buried in the camp cemetery.

Each November, the Italian community honors the 109 000 soldiers who awaited return home.

Dopo Sidi El Barrani (1940), migliaia di italiani furono trasferiti in Sudafrica nel grande campo di Zonderwater, vicino Johannesburg. Guidato dal col. Prinsloo, divenne una piccola città per oltre 100 000 prigionieri. 252 vi morirono.

Ogni prima domenica di novembre, la comunità italiana li commemora, ricordando i 109 000 soldati che attesero il ritorno a casa.

Tomorrow’s Zonderwater wreath 🌹

The largest WWII Allied POW Camp Zonderwater, located 43 km from Pretoria, South Africa, was the largest Allied detention camp of WWII, holding more than 100 000 Italian soldiers between 1941–1947.

A Self-Made Community: From tents, it became a vast complex with 14 blocks / 44 camps, schools, libraries, theatres, workshops, and extensive sports facilities - an entire functioning town built by prisoners to preserve dignity and spirit.

Humanity and legacy: Thanks to humane leadership, community support, and POW solidarity, conditions allowed personal growth and cultural life. 252 Italian soldiers rest at the “Three Arches” cemetery, honored by a memorial inscription.

Il più grande campo di prigionia alleato della WWII: Zonderwater, a 43 km da Pretoria, fu il più grande campo di prigionia alleato della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, con oltre 100.000 soldati italiani detenuti tra il 1941 e il 1947.

Una comunità costruita dal nulla: Da città di tende si trasformò in un grande complesso con 14 blocchi / 44 campi, scuole, biblioteche, teatri, laboratori e numerosi impianti sportivi - una vera città creata dai prigionieri per mantenere dignità e spirito.

Umanità e memoria: Grazie alla guida umana, al sostegno esterno e alla solidarietà interna, i prigionieri poterono crescere e coltivare cultura. 252 soldati italiani riposano nel cimitero “Tre Archi”, commemorati da una dedica.
