Christian Surfers South Africa

Christian Surfers South Africa So that every surfer and surfing community has the opportunity to know and follow Jesus. Both know they are a part a tribe, the tribe of the Creator.

The gospel of Jesus Christ has the ability to bridge cultures, age groups, economic disparity, and any other separator which normally can segregate people. When a Christian meets another Christian the Holy Spirit unites them to the Creator and both have a common relationship which transcends any residual division.

Surrender to the wave of God

Matthew 6:5-10
5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
9 “This, then, is how you should pray:
“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.

The first part of the Lord’s Prayer that some people get stuck on is the line, ‘Your kingdom come, your will be done’ (v.10). They know this is the crush issue. Will they surrender their lives to God? How many of us, if we’re honest, would be more ready to pray, ‘My kingdom come, my will be done?’ But do we really think we can do a better job with our lives than the all-wise God can, the God who knows us best and loves us most? Stimulated by the Lord’s Prayer, we can find ourselves yielding to God: “I give the rest of my life to you, take every part of it.”
This life of surrender is analogous to surfing. The surfer aligns his board with the direction of the wave as it approaches, paddling into the wave with full intent. If the board is facing the wrong direction, the swell is missed. Similarly, we are to align our lives to what God is doing, very intentionally moving our lives in the direction of God’s movements. The surfer then rides the swell, learning to flow with it, doing their best to stay in what’s called the power pocket. In the same way, we must remain prayerfully reliant on the Spirit in all we do, all the time praying, ‘Not my will, but your will be done!’ Only a kingdom wave-rider knows the thrill and power of total surrender to the wave of God’s purposes.

Life’s too short to not surrender

James 4:13-17
13 Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15 Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. 17 If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.

In the first century, the Roman Empire built roads throughout the world making travel easy. People could travel freely and work wherever (v.13). A sense of freedom was in the air. People felt they could do what they wanted, when they wanted, with whom they wanted. For the first time, many people felt they were the masters of their own destinies. But this was a deceptive feeling ! In reality God was the master of their destinies. Instead of always trying to control our lives, we should learn to surrender them.
These verses do not condemn travel, nor making money or planning for the future. Rather, they address the arrogance with which we tend to do these things (v.16). The opposite of pride is humble surrender (v.15) which is best for a few reasons: We don’t know what the future holds (v.14), but thankfully we can know the One who holds the future. OUr lives are as fleeting and fragile as the mist (v.14). Here today, gone tomorrow. This should increase our readiness to surrender our lives to Christ. God rules over our lives, over our circumstances ,over the timing of our death, and over what he wants us to do with our lives (v.15). Finally, to fail to say yes to Christ and his will is to say to sin (v.17). In light of life’s brevity, the choice is clear enough: arrogance or surrender.

Ephesians 2:4-10

4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Outside of Christ we’re as spiritually dead as a co**se - entirely unable to know and respond to the Living God. But the moment we receive Christ we receive his life (v.5). He puts his Spirit in us, infusing into us a new heart, a new capacity to know, love, enjoy and listen to God. Christ’s resurrection power works in us (v.6). Mysteriously, we are united to Jesus Christ himself, so that his heavenly victory is ours too (v.6). For all eternity we become a token of GOd’s unconditional kindness. Though we don’t deserve it we live with and enjoy God forever (v.7). God’s grace does it all; our good deeds don’t qualify us, and our bad deeds don’t disqualify us (v.8-9). We’re not saved by our good works. That said, we are saved for good works (v.10).

Week 9 - God save us out of spiritual death
Read: Ephesians 2:1-5

Made Alive in Christ
2 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh[a] and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.

Read: Philippians 3:1-9

No Confidence in the Flesh
3 Further, my brothers and sisters, rejoice in the Lord! It is no trouble for me to write the same things to you again, and it is a safeguard for you. 2 Watch out for those dogs, those evildoers, those mutilators of the flesh. 3 For it is we who are the circumcision, we who serve God by his Spirit, who boast in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh— 4 though I myself have reasons for such confidence.

If someone else thinks they have reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: 5 circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; 6 as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for righteousness based on the law, faultless.

7 But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. 8 What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in[a] Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith.

Read: Jonah 2:1-10

The end of Chapter 1 saw Jonah thrown into the sea. He can’t swim. He sinks deep enough for seaweed to wrap around his head (v.5). He’s drowning (v.7). THere is nothing he can do to save himself. But notice what he does. He calls out to the Lord (v.1) for mercy. That’s the moment God steps in! God sends us an underwater rescue vehicle in the form of a large fish that swallows him up (1:17), somehow providing a pocket of air, until he is delivered to the beach (v.10). In the belly of the fish, Jonah articulates life’s greatest discovery: ‘Salvation belongs to the Lord’ (v.9). God’s physical rescue of him as he calls for mercy depicts God’s spiritual rescue of us all as we call out for mercy.

A young boy was once told by his mother, ‘Learn one thing from my life. No matter what you have done, or how far away God seems, if you call on God from your heart he will forgive you.’ This was the best counsel anyone gave him. It’s counsel we need too. None of us are worthy of God’s acceptance and forgiveness. It’s not good people who get to God, or get into heaven for that matter. It’s forgiven people, people who have understood that salvation belongs to God alone. God saves those who know they cannot save themselves, who call on him with the desperation of a drowning man.
