Vuyo Kelepu uses Move with Purpose to change his community in Worcester, in the Western Cape. Vuyo has always had a passion for chess and the life values that it taught him. The programme has given him the platform to mentor young people at the Sinethemba After Care Centre.

Stewardship is the ability to use your resources wisely. Many beginners fall into the trap of overly focusing on the Queen. They then don't use the other pieces and end up losing the game. In chess and life we must use our resources wisely, for a greater reward later on.

School holidays offer a great opportunity to spend time learning about life while playing chess. We recently hosted a group in Jeffreys Bay, and over the course of 2 days parents and children were growing together while having fun.

We’ve had a few big recent highlights. A key experience included our CEO Ruan’s trip to Uganda, two chess tournaments in Zithulele, and marketing at the SA Open.

As our young people Move with Purpose, we see a deep impact in healthy communities as they learn to make good decisions.

The SA Open hosted more than 800 chess players for a week of intense competition.

Our Hermanus mentor, Rico, and some of his students from Hermanus High School participated. Rico placed 9th in the Intermediate category, and we are very proud!

Move with Purpose also had a stall where passers-by could find out more about our activities. Learn more at movewithpurposechess.org.

In preparation for the SA Open, a group of learners in our Move with Purpose group in Hermanus participated in the Curro Open chess tournament. Our chess facilitator Rico also achieved his first arbiter norm to become a Provincial Arbiter.

Our CEO Ruan Cilliers visited the SOM Chess Academy in Uganda in June, where he demonstrated Move with Purpose’s model to facilitators.

The Academy was started by Robert Katende in the slums of the Ugandan capital Kampala. His story of developing chess champions was told in the Disney film Queen of Katwe, inspiring chess enthusiasts around the world.

It has been a dream to see Robert’s work and share experiences from our different contexts.

Tournaments offer players the chance to test their skills. Our yearly Youth Day Chess Tournament in Zithulele drew teams from the area as well as Mthatha. We are excited to see people of all ages participating in the event.
