The OPD is so happy with the letter from the National Health Department wherein they agree with the OPD that diapers (nappies for elderly people) are official assistive devices. That means that persons elder than 6 years old, who are suffering from incontinency, with an official prescription of a doctor at all the clinics in the whole country nappies for free can get. The clinics can not use the argue that there is no money. So, please when you are suffering from incontinency go to the doctor and ask a prescription for the nappies. The OPD is still going on with their project, but we are also going to start the people who does not get them from the clinics, to help them to get them for free. to get them temporally through us.

The Kouga municipality missed their change. They rebuild the waiting room in the main building at the Da Gama road and we were hoping that they kept their promise to make all the municipality buildings accessible. In stead of asking us for advice, they did not follow the law again and again it is not accessible for everybody. It is again waisting of money. Why does they not listen to the service provider who is a representative of people with limitations? Why? Is it so difficult to follow the law and listening to people who knows everything about accessibility? A pity. We know they are half way and still rebuilding, maybe they can come to us, so we can control if the plans are following the International law or not and can make the last part accessible. Please come for advice.

A disability becomes a disability when the surrounding a person is restricting in his function.
This is so true. Think this over and you will agree.

According to the promise of the municipality that all the municipality buildings will be accessible in 2026, the OPD, as service provider, is making audits to assist the municipality and advice what they have to do, and in what way with less costs they can do it. But priority is; getting an accessible building where everybody can function like others do, conform the law. We also are making audits for other organizations or private, like shops, B&B's, churches etc. Call our office for more information. Our workers are experts, have a lot of knowledge about all the need and experience people with limitations can have around and with the limitations. Not only people who are using wheelchairs, but also the blind people, people with hearing problems, elderly people, bad walkers, amputees, quadriplegics, etc. We can help you and advice you with all you needs to function like others do.

Most of the emergency exits of buildings in the Kouga area are not friendly for people with a limitation. It is scarring and dangerous. We were in a library and looked at the emergency exit and saw that when you are in and there is a problem in the front you can go to the special exit. But first you have to look for the key of the gate. Then you have to open the gate to inside. But first move some stools and tables first. Than you can easily open the outside door to outside. That is very good. But then you see a huge step. We asked the lady of the library in what way a wheelchair can go out and be save. Her answer was even shocking. "Not. I do not think you can go out here. But you can wait for the fire brigade. They know, I think, how to get you out. " Our question was; "Do you think they will be in time?" "Do not ask me. That you have to ask them." What a service for people who are coming for books.

Do you know that every citizen of SA has the right to participate in the development of health policies and everyone has the right to participate in decision-making on matters affecting one's health. This is very important and one of the seven rights of patients. Open your mouth when the doctor or nurse is deciding what is the best for you without let you participate in this decision,

This week we had a meeting about health and social community. It was a good meeting. But the building where we were in was very dangerous. The moment there was a fire we could not come out of that building. In front of the emergency exit we were sitting with 8 people and a huge table. The door was unlocked, but the gate in front of the door was locked. I asked where the key was and the answer was that the office, where the key was in, was closed because the lady of that office was ill. But I do not think that it was helping when we had the key. because outside the building were two high steps and other things were putted there. It was scarring and then we were realizing that many buildings in the Kouga even does not have an emergency exit. Did you ever loke at it when you was in a building?

Today we gave a workshop to elderly people in Humansdorp. The workshop was about incontinence and diapers. We explained that you do not have to be ashamed. That incontinence is normal and there is many things you can do about it or prevent yourself for it. They were so happy about the workshop and learned a lot. We also told them about the nappy project of the OPD. We, workers of the OPD, are so happy that we can help people to be happy and live like others although they are suffering from incontinence. Phone us when you want to know more about this subject.

Last week we went with some representative from the municipality to the Ward 3-8 Office. We made an assessment about the adaptions there was made. But it was really shocking what we saw. I parked my car on the special place for disabled people. Jos took my wheelchair out of the back of the car and before he knew the wheelchair rolled down to the grass. We take some measurements and discovered that f.i. the platform for the special parking bays is too small for parking two cars. Also other things were not conform the law. We could see that they did their best to make the building accessible, but we also saw that the architect/designer did not have the knowledge about how and why he must draw it and that nobody has checked the drawings if it is according the law. Result; the municipality must use money again to make it accessible.
