Karlin Muller (Jacobs)’ research, which the PHASA Foundation has proudly funded over the past two years, examines how private landowners balance economic and ecological priorities when managing these two conservation-dependent species. Both Bontebok and Cape Mountain Zebra were once reduced to critically low numbers, and their recovery has relied heavily on private wildlife ranches, making an understanding of landowner motivations essential for their continued conservation success.

The presentation formed part of the conference’s opening session on the multiple values of wildlife, exploring how ecological, social, cultural and economic considerations shape real-world management decisions. The PHASA Foundation’s continued investment in this research reflects its broader commitment to supporting science-based, landowner-informed conservation strategies that strengthen the long-term future of South Africa’s private wildlife sector

We welcome Minister Maynier’s publication of the CITES export quotas for elephant, black rhinoceros and leopard hunting trophies. This provides urgently needed regulatory certainty for the wildlife sector, professional hunting operations and rural communities that depend on a functioning, sustainable wildlife economy.

We particularly acknowledge the hard work of the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) in undertaking the scientific assessments that inform this process, as well as the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) for advancing the regulatory and administrative work required to publish the quotas.

Science-based, carefully managed quotas are central to responsible conservation practice. They support sound population management, incentivise the protection of habitat and wildlife, sustain rural employment and create tangible economic value from conservation landscapes.

We commend Minister Maynier, SANBI and DFFE for recognising that sustainable use must be guided by credible science, effective governance and South Africa’s conservation obligations.

A well-regulated wildlife economy remains an essential contributor to biodiversity conservation and rural tourism.

Landowners, farmers, hunters and community members are encouraged to complete the survey and contribute valuable local knowledge to this important science.

Ilse Joubert (PHASA Foundation Chairperson), Prof. Peet van der Merwe and Jess de Klerk (PHASA CEO) had a productive meeting to advance our important research initiative examining the value of export quotas and their role within South Africa’s hunting industry.

Prof. Peet van der Merwe of North-West University’s TREES research entity is conducting the survey to help quantify the economic value of relevant wildlife species and their contribution to conservation, rural communities and the broader wildlife economy. The research forms part of the PHASA Foundation’s ongoing collaboration with NWU-TREES to strengthen evidence-based understanding of sustainable wildlife use and its socio-economic contribution.

A sincere thank you to all PHASA members who have already completed the survey. We are halfway towards reaching the required number of responses, and every additional contribution will strengthen the reliability and value of the findings.

If you have not yet participated, please take 10 minutes to complete the survey shared through the PHASA provincial WhatsApp groups. Your input is vital in ensuring that the realities, value and conservation contribution of the professional hunting sector are accurately reflected in future research and stakeholder discussions.

The PHASA Foundation was proud to be represented by our Chairperson at the 4th Animal Colloquium on Animal Welfare, Human Rights, Rights of Nature and Human–Wildlife Coexistence. During the programme, Mia-Vasti Botha delivered a presentation on Managing Wildlife Conflict in the Bojanala Platinum District, North West, highlighting the importance of practical, locally informed approaches to coexistence between people and wildlife. Her presentation focused on the realities faced by rural communities, landowners, conservation authorities and the wildlife industry where human activities and wildlife increasingly overlap. Effective wildlife-conflict management requires more than a single intervention; it depends on cooperation, sound research, responsible wildlife management, open communication and solutions that recognise both community needs and conservation objectives.
