Koda has developed the ability to track whatever I ask her to, and it hasn’t affected her man-tracking ability at all — as her impressive track record continues to show.

If she could talk, I’m pretty sure she’d say that, besides poachers, lion tracking is right at the top of her list. 🦁

For obvious safety reasons, I don’t allow her to track lions using the Independent Tracking Dog Method, so the tracking leash comes out. She often gets us right up to the lions but can’t always see them because of the long grass or thick vegetation.

That’s when I have to give her a better vantage point… and my shoulder seems to be the perfect place. 🐾

We recently finished a 7-day Track and Sign Course, where everyone achieved a Level in Track & Sign.

The days were spent doing what we love, tracking and listening to the bush. Always good to see people from all over the world pursuing tracking simply because they love it.

One of the top tracking events of the year. 🐾

Trackers from across the country came together for Track & Sign and Trailing Specialist evaluations, hosted this year by the MORE Field Guide College in the Marataba section of the Marakele National Park.

Senior tracker evaluators Colin Patrick and Andreas Liebenberg put candidates through a challenging series of high-level assessments. The variety of track and sign questions was exceptional, and the trailing conditions were perfect for the standard expected at Specialist level.

Candidates successfully tracked and located lion, buffalo, black rhino, white rhino, and elephant — with three candidates ultimately achieving their Trailing Specialist qualification. 👏

The MORE Collection has continued investing in tracker training and assessments over the past few years, and the results are starting to show. The three successful candidates came from Lion Sands and Tinga Lodges in the Lowveld, as well as Marataba Safari Lodge in the Waterberg.

Now we look ahead to the annual Senior Evaluations in the Lowveld this August.

13/4/26: I recently completed a Track and Signs course with trainer Samantha Patrick, facilitated through Colin Patrick Training
at MORE Field Guide College

The course was exceptionally well structured, striking a perfect balance between practical fieldwork and theoretical learning. Spending approximately 8 hours per day in the field, combined with an hour of classroom based theory, allowed for a thorough and immersive understanding of the material.

The training was delivered in a highly professional manner, with strong trainer student engagement that encouraged participation, questions, and deeper learning.

Overall, this course exceeded my expectations and has significantly enhanced my skills and confidence in tracking and interpreting signs in the field. I would highly recommend this course to anyone interested in developing their tracking abilities.
