Job Description: Community-Based Trails Guide
Position Overview:
The Community-Based Trails Guide is responsible for leading visitors on nature-based hiking trails within the community, ensuring safety, education, and an enjoyable outdoor experience. The guide will interpret the natural and cultural heritage of the area, promote conservation awareness, and provide excellent visitor service. This role also supports community tourism initiatives by contributing to local economic development and fostering pride in the natural environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Trail Guiding & Interpretation
- Lead groups safely on designated community-based hiking trails.
- Interpret and share knowledge about local biodiversity, ecosystems, geology, history, and cultural heritage.
- Educate visitors on environmental awareness and conservation practices.
Visitor Safety & Experience
- Conduct pre-trail safety briefings and ensure compliance with trail rules.
- Monitor visitor wellbeing, assist with first aid where necessary, and handle emergencies appropriately.
- Provide a welcoming, engaging, and memorable experience for visitors.
Trail & Environmental Management
- Assist in maintaining and monitoring trails to ensure safety and accessibility.
- Report environmental issues, hazards, and trail conditions to management.
- Promote sustainable and responsible tourism practices.
Community Engagement
- Represent the community positively and promote local culture and traditions.
- Work with community members to support tourism initiatives and job creation.
- Participate in training, skills development, and conservation awareness campaigns.
Requirements:
- Minimum of Grade 12 (Matric).
- FGASA Nature Site Guide (NQF2) or equivalent qualification (advantageous but not always mandatory for entry-level, depending on community tourism context).
- First Aid Level 1 (minimum requirement).
- Valid driver’s license and PDP (advantageous).
