The graph shows a summary of the sanitation incidents we have had this year, from Jan to 23 April 2026.
The red dotted line shows blocked and surcharging manholes. The blue line shows sewer ingress into stormwater systems which flow into the headwaters of the Molweni River in Springside nature Reserve. The orange shaded bar graph super-imposes the length of time incidents have taken to repair. You can see that often the issues clump together: Mid-February and Mid-April were bad patches. While this is still too many incidents on average - 21 in 4 months - it is better than where we were in the early years of the MtM. In the same period in 2024, we had 51 incidents. In 2025, we had 27.

Rewilding is more than just planting—it’s about restoring balance, rebuilding ecosystems, and giving nature the space it needs to heal and thrive 🌿✨

For the second year running, the UHTM Marathon has shown incredible support to the Mend the Molweni (MTM) Project — and this year, they went even further.

With a generous donation of R10 000, they are helping us continue the vital work of the MTM Monitoring Programme — the very heart of what we do.

This contribution means more than just funding. It means we can keep the project alive a little longer, sustain the employment of our dedicated Enviro Champs, and continue making a real difference in our communities.

As a project that largely depends on sponsorship, support like this is not just appreciated — it is essential.

A heartfelt thank you to Highway Mail for shining a light on our work and standing with us in creating lasting impact.

We have had some excellent dealings with the Water and Sanitation Unit of eThekwini Municipality in the past few weeks. We met with senior management on 19 March in which we shared the progress of the MtM, hading over our summary document for 2025. We were also able to share what was still difficult for us. The upshot of this meeting was the recommitment of EWS to doing periodic flushing of the sewer lines in Hillcrest, and to attend to the issues related to pump station failure.

Just before meeting senior EWS management, we had a terrible inflow of fat balls and sewer into the stormwater culverts on Springside Road. One was so bad that the culvert blocked and overflowed onto the verge-side. It took a while to find the right person in the Roads and Stormwater department to help unblock the culvert, but when we did, we got immediate help. Mr Khanyisani Sibisi mobilised his A-Team to clear the culvert immediately.

Routine inspections were conducted in the Springside area from 02–07 March by Inspector Hlengiwe Magwaza, monitoring a total of 24–25 sites during the week. Overall, the sites were functioning well with only a few issues identified. Site 6 (Culvert 45) was reported blocked earlier in the week but was successfully unblocked by the municipal team on 05 March. Site 8 (stormwater culvert in Springside) was observed throughout the week to be running heavy clean water, which continues to be monitored. Apart from these issues, all other sites were operating normally, and regular inspections will continue to ensure the system functions properly and that any concerns are addressed promptly.

A neighbour out for a walk past Pollinator Ridge captured this beautiful moment in our thriving, rewilded ecosystem 🌿
What was once a barren lawn has, over the past three years, been transformed into a vibrant natural habitat — much to the delight of this frequent heron visitor.
Nature’s cycle in action: that snake likely enjoyed a frog that fed on insects drawn to butterflies who pollinated the flowers… and the chain continues. This is why rewilding matters. 💚
