A spiral horn hunt is a true adventure. Beautiful scenery, quiet moments and memories edged into your mind long after the hunt is over. They test your patience and perseverance — early starts, long hours behind the glass and plenty of miles on the boots.
What some people don’t realise is that hunting isn’t simply going out and shooting what you see. The right species may present itself, but that doesn’t always mean the right animal. Hunting with purpose means being selective, sticking to your criteria and enjoying every moment that leads to that opportunity. You can do everything right and still come up short — they are masters of their environment and usually hold the upper hand. But on day 4, the Gray Ghost made a mistake, and the hard hours and perseverance paid off. The right Bushbuck escaped us this time… but that just means we get to do this all over again!

In April an article came out in The Daily Maverick, titled “Dead wild animals by numbers — Professional Hunters Association stats tell a grim tale” The article comes from a place and an organization – the Conservation Action Trust – that is completely anti-consumptive use. Let us be a little clearer: completely anti the use of wildlife through hunting tourism.

Knowing the truth, we wrote a rebuttal titled: ”There will be many more dead wild animals if hunting is outlawed.”

In our rebuttal, we outline how the consumptive use of wildlife brings significant benefits to wildlife and people throughout South Africa, specifically the very rural parts of the country.

We walk through the on-the-ground reality and our personal experience while on-site in Zululand, South Africa — how rhinos are a walking example of these efforts daily and the harsh realities of what would happen to the wildlife, communities, and habitats if hunting went away.

🌿 Rare Bird Alert! 🌿

What an incredible few days it has been! We've had the privilege of spotting a female Black Coucal (Centropus grillii), a first-ever addition to our Reserve's bird list! 🐦✨

The Black Coucal is truly one of the most unusual birds in the world, and for good reason. Of the 28 coucal species found globally, it is the only one known to be polyandrous—a breeding behavior so extraordinary that it has piqued the interest of ornithologists for decades. Even more fascinating, it’s the males that take on the primary role of raising the chicks, further highlighting the species' unique lifestyle!

This sighting is a testament to the diversity and wonder of the wildlife here at the Reserve. Nature always has surprises in store!
