Cliff Path walkway reopened

The Rotary Club of Hermanus, Hermanus Business Chamber and other stakeholders reopened an upgraded wooden section of the Cliff Path along Marine Drive, adding two new viewing decks in front of Swallow Park and Just Pure Bistro. Fundraising and design were led by Trevor Edwards’ CBD Revitalisation Cluster, architect Lize Fick and Ross Dewar of the Cliff Path Management Group. Mayor Archie Klaas praised the collaboration and said successful projects inspire wider town upgrades and community partnership.

Lost swallow returns to Swallow Park

The Swallow Park Revitalisation Project celebrated a significant milestone with the return of a wooden swallow sculpture, once a prominent feature at the park's entrance. Local historian Dinkie Marais presented the sculpture, which was rediscovered at the Old Harbour Museum, to project leader Trevor Edwards and the revitalisation team. The sculpture, originally rescued by handyman Nartjies de Villiers, will be incorporated into the park's new design, which aims to create an indigenous fynbos garden and enhance community engagement. This upgrade is part of a broader vision to connect key heritage sites along Marine Drive, fostering a seamless and walkable experience that honours Hermanus's natural and cultural heritage.

The Woman They Called Swallow

📸 Slide 1: Swallow Neethling in her youth

Before Swallow Park had a name, it had a caretaker: Miss Magdalena Neethling, lovingly known as “Swallow” for her quick, birdlike energy.

An educator at St Peter’s School in Hermanus, she passed a neglected triangle of land on her walk every day. Around 1927, she petitioned the council to let her turn it into a public garden, but they gave her no funds, just permission. The rest she did herself.

With quiet determination and help from Mr. Frikkie van Eeden, she planned, funded, and planted the garden that would become Swallow Park.
