Sheila Lyle, Chairperson of Hermanus, steers this independent foster home with a mission to give abandoned and vulnerable babies in the Overstrand a chance at a brighter future.
Founded in 2009 as a partnership between Hermanus Child Welfare and the United Church, Izibusiso, meaning “blessings” in Xhosa, became an independent home in 2021. Today, it provides care for children between birth and six years of age, offering safety, love and stability until suitable long-term “forever homes” can be found.
For Sheila, who has lived in Hermanus for nearly 20 years, the need to uplift her community across all walks of life has always been clear. Her inspiration stems from a personal encounter with Nelson Mandela, whose compassion and commitment to equality continue to guide her.
When asked what motivates her, Sheila’s answer is simple. “The need to give back to the community.”
We celebrate Sheila for the hope she brings and the lives she touches every day.
