Owl Rescue Centre

Owl Rescue Centre Owl Rescue Centre is dedicated to the protection of owls in South Africa. NPC Reg. No 2012/126036/08

Realising that there was a rapid decline in owl numbers and that owls had become one of the most common wildlife casualties brought into veterinary practices, Brendan and his wife Danelle, decided to focus all their efforts on conserving them. The organisation they founded, Owl Rescue Centre, is based at Hartbeespoort in the North West Province, and now takes in more than a thousand owls every yea

r through their rescue efforts. The owls are rehabilitated and when they can survive on their own in the wild, are released in the sanctuary – a farm which is located within a 12,000-hectare conservancy. Owl Rescue Centre is a registered Non-profit company and permitted rehabilitation facility concerned with the well-being of all owl species and wildlife in Southern Africa. Owl Rescue Centre is dedicated to protect owls, rescue owls that are in danger and rehabilitate and care for owls that have been injured, are sick, poisoned or orphaned and then release them back into their natural environment using specifically researched release methods. We are also involved in several conservation projects to decrease the high mortality rate of owl species. Contact number:

A little biscuit that we rescued 30 minutes ago just outside Harrismith.. And released right now. That must be the shortest stint in rehab ever😉

Driving back from Harrismith now, I spotted this beautiful but dazed little fella standing right in the middle of the fast lane of the N3.
I managed a sketchy run-and-grab between the speeding trucks to get him—I’m pretty sure I almost made the front page for all the wrong reasons.
Luckily, the kite seems to be recovering quickly. We’ll grab a takeaway coffee at the garage while he settles, then see if he's ready to fly home😉

We are getting a lot more calls lately to rescue larger, more dangerous mammals. Netting or trapping them is sometimes incredibly stressful and can place them at risk for capture myopathy, so being able to dart and transport them safely would make a massive difference.
The quote for a new dart gun is R31 400. If we can get 3 100 people to donate just R10 each, we’ll hit our goal in no time.
As a bonus, our vet has offered to come out and give us a professional hand with darting whenever we need it—on the sole condition that we buy him a Wimpy breakfast on every expedition!
If you're keen to help us make these rescues a bit safer for everyone involved, our details are below😉

A while ago, we mentioned that we were building a new otter rehabilitation, training, and exploration enclosure on our sanctuary.
We were hoping to have it finished by yesterday, which coincidentally was World Otter Day!
But because our rescue calendar is pretty full, it’s going to take about three more weeks to wrap up.
It’s a 3,000-square-meter enclosure with a 600-cubic-meter dam, which is perfect for young otters to learn how to swim and catch their own dinner. And you're probably not going to be surprised by this, but the project has been proudly sponsored by Toyota SA .
A huge thank you to Toyota! Besides making pretty cool cars, you guys love wildlife too😉

Another really long journey over the last two days for seven separate rescues.
These colorful characters were two of them. My reward for driving so far to rescue them is that I get to play with them for a couple of hours before I fly them up to baboon rehab at Prime CREW Wildlife in Limpopo tomorrow😉

Just another baboon rescue😉

A couple of large warthogs had made themselves a little too at home in the suburbs and needed to be relocated to a proper wild home.
Apparently, the secret to catching a warthog versus a bush pig is leaving a trail of cheese curls. The things one learns rescuing wildlife hey😉

Flash had a bit of a rumble with a large bush pig a couple of days ago.. Since then, hundreds of wonderful people have reached out to ask how he's doing. Rest assured, he is doing really well and has already reported back for duty😉
