π₯ BEFORE THE FLAMES COME π₯
Every year, long before wildfire season arrives, our team begins one of the most important and demanding conservation tasks we undertake: creating and maintaining firebreaks to protect the lions and wildlife at Glen Garriff Conservation.
What many people don't see is the enormous amount of work that happens before a single firebreak can be burned.
Thousands of metres of long grass must first be cut and cleared. Equipment must be maintained, vehicles and tractors fuelled, and countless hours of labour invested to prepare the ground safely. Only then can controlled burns be conducted to create the firebreaks that could one day stop a devastating wildfire in its tracks.
Wildfires don't wait for us to be ready. In a matter of minutes, a fire can threaten habitats, infrastructure, and most importantly, the animals in our care.
These firebreaks are not optional. They are a critical line of defence that helps keep our lions safe.
As a non-profit conservation organisation, the annual cost of preparing and burning these firebreaks places significant pressure on our resources. Fuel costs alone are substantial, and every litre used is an investment in protecting the lives entrusted to us.
Today, we are asking for your help.
By making a donation towards our firebreak programme, you become part of the effort to safeguard the lions of Glen Garriff and help us prepare for the season ahead.
No contribution is too small. Every donation helps cover fuel, equipment, maintenance, and the ongoing work required to create these vital protective barriers.
Together, we can help ensure that when wildfire season arrives, our lions have the protection they deserve.
