Tharros Family Centre renders services to children and families in Hankey and surrounding areas. Our projects and programs include:

Preschool for 3-to-5-year-olds. Foster and Safety family support, placement and social work services. Skills Develpment (sewing, gardening). Mother2Mother support group for teenage and young pregnant moms. Protective Behaviours in primary schools. Effective Parenting

training. We welcome volunteers who have a passion for children, and we seek assistance with any extra mural activity that promotes their wellbeing and development: art, music, dance, drama, sport, outings, and more. A heartfelt thank you to St Francis College (St Francis Bay) for supporting Tharros this Mandela Day. đź’™

Year after year, the pupils of St Francis College continue to show what kindness, generosity and community spirit look like in action.

This Mandela Day, they collected an incredible variety of donations for the children and families we support – clothing, toys, food and stationery. A special thank you to this wonderful group of Grade 7 learners who gave their time to carefully sort everything into bags, ready for distribution. What a fantastic team!

Your generosity will make a real difference to so many children and families, and we’re so grateful that you continue to walk alongside Tharros in bringing hope to our community.

🎉 Thárros Family Centre is 10 Years Old! 🎉

This month, we're celebrating 10 years of courage, hope, and community.

Since 2016, Thárros has grown from a dream into a place where children and families are supported, encouraged, and empowered. While our journey has changed over the years, our purpose has remained the same—to nurture, protect, and strengthen children by building healthy families and communities.

This milestone belongs to everyone who has walked the journey with us—our team, trustees, volunteers, donors, partners, and the families who have trusted us. Thank you for believing in our vision.

As we celebrate our first decade, we're excited for what lies ahead. Here's to the next 10 years of making a difference, one family at a time.

🌍♻️ Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.

What a fantastic day of learning and action at our Holiday Club!

Yesterday, we were privileged to partner with Kouga Municipality, who visited our children to share an important message about caring for our environment. They taught us why it is so important to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, and how each of us can play a part in keeping our communities clean.

Learning quickly turned into action! Equipped with rubbish bags kindly provided by the municipality, our children headed out around Hankey Primary School and the surrounding streets to collect litter. It was wonderful to see them taking pride in their community and putting what they had learned into practice.

To top it all off, the Kouga Municipality team returned to collect all the filled rubbish bags, ensuring that our efforts made a real difference.

A heartfelt thank you to Yonela Mlindazwe, Luyolo Gulwa, Noluthando Biyana and Zukhanye Alven for spending the morning with our children. Your enthusiasm, encouragement and practical guidance helped make environmental responsibility come alive in a meaningful and memorable way. We are also grateful to Kouga Municipality for partnering with us to inspire the next generation to care for the places they call home. Together, we are building cleaner, healthier communities—one child, one family and one neighbourhood at a time. 💚

🤗🤗 Tharros has had a makeover!

Our fresh new colour has brightened up our building and put a little extra bounce in our step. A fresh coat of paint may seem like a small thing, but it creates a welcoming, cheerful space for the children and families who walk through our doors every day.

A heartfelt thank you to Ultimate Paints Jeffreys Bay, especially Ashwell, who guided us through the process. Ashwell went out of his way to offer advice, answer our questions, and help us choose a perfect colour.

A special thank you to Joseph Mahleza and Xolani Kana, who brought this transformation to life. From the moment they arrived, they were professional, friendly, and incredibly thorough in their work. They took great pride in every detail and made the entire process easy and stress-free.

A Community’s Love

When we received a short-notice request to care for four babies and 4 teenagers, we said yes — and then immediately faced the reality that we had very little of what was needed to welcome them.
We reached out to our community for help, and what happened next has left us deeply grateful.

Within hours, we received calls asking what was needed. Food, formula, nappies, clothing, baby essentials, and financial contributions arrived from people who simply wanted to make sure these children were cared for.

To every person who donated, shared our appeal, encouraged others to help, or kept us in their thoughts and prayers: thank you. Your generosity reminds us that when a community comes together, incredible things can happen.

From all of us at Tharros Family Centre — and especially from our beneficiaries — thank you for making such a big difference. ❤️

This week forces us to face a painful truth.

Not every child in South Africa grows up feeling safe.

Some are hurt in silence.
Some are ignored when they speak.
Some are carrying fear long before they understand what it means.

And too many are learning too early that the world does not always protect them.

Child Protection Week is not just a campaign.
It is a reminder that a child’s safety should never depend on luck, silence, or circumstance.

It asks something of all of us:
To notice.
To listen.
To speak up.
To protect.

Because abuse thrives where there is silence — and protection begins where silence ends.

At Thárros, we support children through our Protective Behaviours program to recognise unsafe situations, trust their voices, and respond in ways that protect themselves.
