💛 April is a month of reflection, celebration, and remembrance as we honor the birth month of Dr. Maya Angelou, who would have turned 98 years old today.

A poet, author, activist, teacher, and global voice for justice, Dr. Angelou’s words continue to bloom in hearts around the world. Her life reminds us that courage, compassion, and truth can shape generations, and that legacy is something we actively carry forward.

April 4th also carries a sacred weight in history. On this day, we remember the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose assassination in 1968 forever marked this date. For Dr. Angelou, it was a day she held with deep reverence; often choosing quiet reflection over celebration, honoring his life over her own birthday.

Did you know that the Dr. Maya Angelou Foundation (DMAF) is the only nonprofit entity Dr. Angelou created and founded during her lifetime to further her philanthropic endeavors?

Guided by Dr. Maya Angelou’s vision of “sharing in the glory of a good life, lived joyously”, DMAF's mission is to activate positive change and inspire the next generation of critical thinkers, creative writers, and courageous leaders through our innovative programs rooted in greater access to education, equality, and justice for all.

Though she is no longer with us physically, her voice continues to guide us, reminding us to rise above adversity and live with grace.
“Still I rise.” — Dr. Maya Angelou

🎉 Happy Celestial Birthday, Dr. Maya Angelou.

ASSASSINATION NATION – WHEN THE RULE OF LAW DIES IN THE STREET

CHINETTE GALLICHAN (35), a labour attorney, was gunned down this morning outside the CCMA offices in Johannesburg. She was shot by a lone gunman who took nothing. No robbery. No hijacking. No theft. This was not random. This was a targeted killing, an assassination.

Reports indicate that Gallichan was involved in a labour dispute linked to a mining company, where retrenched workers were seeking compensation. If this is true, then we are no longer a country where disputes are settled in boardrooms and courtrooms. We are a country where disputes are settled with bullets.

So we must ask ourselves:-
Why was she murdered?
Who wanted her silenced?
Who benefits from her death?

What can we expect now? A task team? A statement condemning violence? A promise of justice? And then what, years of nothing, a docket that disappears, witnesses too afraid to speak, and another file gathering dust while a family buries a daughter?

And even if there is an arrest, even if someone is convicted, what then? A long prison sentence paid for by taxpayers? That is not justice. That is administration.

South Africa has reached a point where professional people, attorneys, accountants, investigators, business people are being assassinated over commercial disputes. This is not just crime anymore. This is organized crime.

Too many illegal fi****ms. Too many desperate men with no work.
Too many people willing to pay for a trigger to be pulled. Too little in the way of resources for the SAPS. Too much for the justice system to handle effectively. Too little consequence.

Sadly, we are not shocked anymore and this may be the most dangerous thing of all.

Our sons and daughters are not safe. Not on the streets. Not in their offices. Not even at institutions meant to protect their rights.

Chinette Gallichan was 35 years old.
She had a career. A future. A family. A life ahead of her.
Now she is a headline and a statistic.

Her death is senseless. Her murder is a stain on this country and those who govern it.

To her family and friends, we extend our sincere condolences. But condolences are cheap. Words are cheap. In South Africa, life has become cheap.

And this is the real crime.
