Hamburg Hounds and Hooves was initiated I 2012 by a young 15 year old Hamburg resident; Kristin Mace. After seeing the poor health and the neglect of the local dogs she decided to make a change, she managed to raise funds to enable the Port Alfred SPCA to come out and vaccinate dogs, treat any sick or injured animals and collect dogs for sterilisation. The village of Hamburg does not fall under an
y SPCA jurisdiction, so they charge a call out fee and they have to charge for any medical treatment administered. In January 2015, there was a massive outbreak of Canine Distemper, a terminal disease which spreads rapidly. This spurred Mandy Bleach to get involved by assisting Kristin to revive Hamburg Hounds. We have, to date vaccinated all of the dogs in Hamburg against this and other deadly diseases to prevent future outbreaks, and we continue to vaccinate every new puppy or dog that attend our clinics. We work closely with the State Veterinarians from Peddie and the inspectors from the Port Alfred SPCA, this relationship enables us to treat any cases that are beyond our knowledge. Mandy Bleach resigned from the project at the end of September 2016 but the project will still continue to grow from strength to strength. We aim to make a change within the community and we wont stop until we do.
