WHAT IS SHIGELLOSIS DISEASE

Shigellosis is a highly contagious intestinal infection caused by a group of bacteria known as Shigella.

KEY FACTS ABOUT SHIGELLOSIS

• How it spreads: It transmits easily via the fecal-oral route—through person-to-person contact, changing diapers, sexual contact, or consuming contaminated food and water. Just a tiny amount of bacteria can make a person sick.

• MAIN SYMPTOMS: Diarrhea (often bloody or containing mucus), severe stomach cramps, fever, nausea, and tenesmus (a painful, persistent urge to pass stool even when the bowels are empty).

• TIMELINE: Symptoms typically start 1 to 3 days after exposure and last for about 5 to 7 days.

• WHO IS MOST AT RISK: Children under 5 years old, international travelers, and people with weakened immune systems.

• TREATMENT: Most mild cases clear up on their own with rest and plenty of fluids. Severe or prolonged cases may require antibiotics, though some strains are growing increasingly resistant to standard treatments

THE CONTY LEBEPE FOUNDATION IS OUTRAGED BY THE HORRIFIC KILLING AND DISCOVERY OF SIX WOMEN IN EKHURHULENI.

As the foundation that is dedicated to community development, social justice, and advocating for the rights and safety of vulnerable groups, with a strong focus on combatting Gender-Based Violence, we are deeply shocked, angry and profoundly saddened, following the gruesome discovery of the bodies of seven women in Ekhurhuleni region in Gauteng province.

This horrific incident is a devastating reminder of the relentless scourge of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) that continues to plague our society. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and communities of the victims. No family should ever have to endure the unimaginable pain of losing their loved ones to such senseless and barbaric acts of violence.

The Conty Lebepe Foundation strongly condemns these killings.

Women in South Africa have a fundamental, constitutional right to safety, dignity, and life. The fact that multiple bodies can be discovered in this manner points to a deeply entrenched crisis that requires an urgent, uncompromising response from law enforcement and the justice system. We call upon the South African Police Service (SAPS) to deploy all necessary resources to conduct a swift, thorough, and transparent investigation.

The perpetrators of these heinous crimes must be hunted down, arrested, and face the full might of the law. We can not allow these victims to become mere statistics.

Furthermore, we urge community members who may have any information, no matter how small, to come forward and assist law enforcement. Breaking the silence is vital to bringing these killers to justice and ensuring our neighborhoods are safe for women and children.

The Conty Lebepe Foundation remains committed to fighting against GBVF and standing in solidarity with victims and their families. We will monitor this case closely to ensure that justice is not delayed and accountability is served.
