Selati Game Reserve

This past weekend marked our annual 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢 𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐝 — It was a battle of the binoculars as the teams traversed every corner of the reserve, tallying an impressive 𝟏𝟖𝟑 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬, including 18 not recorded during last year’s event.

🥇 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧’ 𝐑𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐬 claimed first place with 𝟏𝟒𝟎 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬, featuring the weekend’s star sighting: a 𝐁𝐮𝐟𝐟𝐲 𝐏𝐢𝐩𝐢𝐭, recorded on Selati for the 𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦 𝑓𝑖𝑟𝑠𝑡 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒!
🥈 𝐍𝐠𝐮𝐧𝐢 𝐍𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐬 followed with 𝟏𝟐𝟗 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬, and
🥉 𝐍𝐲𝐚𝐥𝐚 𝐍𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐬 secured third with 𝟏𝟐𝟏 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬.

A special highlight was a fascinating talk by 𝐃𝐫 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐒𝐦𝐢𝐭-𝐑𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐧, Head of Conservation at BirdLife South Africa, who shared valuable insights into their conservation work before joining the Nyala Nyonis team for the weekend.

As always, the event was filled with camaraderie, friendly competition, and plenty of fun. Our official Selati bird list now stands at an incredible 𝟑𝟐𝟔 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬!

The bush stands quiet in anticipation! Soon, the first proper rains will fall and the landscape will awaken in a burst of green. Migrant birds will come back in abundance, the Selati River will stir, and life across the reserve will once again flourish.

🦏 Meet some of the Selati Management Team 🦒

Behind every successful conservation story is a dedicated and passionate team. While we’re highlighting a few faces here, countless others contribute their skills, experience, and heart to making Selati thrive. We are deeply grateful to every member of this incredible crew, whose collective energy protects and celebrates the beauty of our reserve.

The Selati landowners don’t often get to gather under one roof (or one tree, in our case). Between work and life, and trying to squeeze in “Selati time” somewhere in between, it’s usually the AGM that drags everyone into the same place. Even the social afterwards seems to fly and its hardly enough time to really “let their hair down”.

So this year, we cranked things up a notch and hosted our very own “𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢 𝐀𝐦𝐚𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐚𝐜𝐞” the day before. Think less 𝐵𝑜𝑎𝑟𝑑 𝑜𝑓 𝐷𝑖𝑟𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑠 and more 𝑆𝑢𝑟𝑣𝑖𝑣𝑜𝑟: 𝐵𝑢𝑠ℎ𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑑 𝐸𝑑𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛. Landowners turned part Sherlock Holmes 🧐 and part Bear Grylls as they followed clues throughout the reserve and solved riddles. Clues were hidden everywhere: in helium balloons floating above the suspension bridge (cue some very questionable pellet-gun aim), buried team packs in the Selati riverbed, and the grand finale - a heroic volunteer from each team in nothing but “Faf-style" speedos 🇿🇦, doggy-paddling through a dam all in the name of glory.

If nothing else, the event proved two things: 1) Selati folk will do just about anything for bragging rights, and 2) some images can never, ever be unseen. 😳
