The Ubunye Foundation is a Not-For-Profit organisation established in 2002 and led by rural communities in Ngqushwa and Sarah Baartman Municipalities in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. After months of conducting child assessments, the Isisekelo team is back at the ECD centres, working with practitioners to see how much progress the learners have made.

These assessments help practitioners understand where children are doing well and where they may need a little more support.

Sinako Programme Hosts Its Final Imbizo for 2026!

The Sinako Programme recently brought together savings groups from different communities for its final Imbizo of 2026. The gathering provided a space for all the groups to share their business journeys, discuss the challenges they face and work together to find solutions.

Throughout the Imbizo, many women reflected on how being part of a savings group has helped them work towards their goals, grow their businesses and improve their lives.

One group member shared a particularly touching story of how she used the small income she earned from selling sweets and fatcakes at schools to support a matric learner who was going through a difficult time. Every month, she helped the learner with toiletries and food, and even contributed towards making her matric farewell possible.

Despite having limited resources herself, she found joy in being able to help a child in need.

Khula Nathi Music Programme in Gwalana! 🎵

The learners from Zanolwazi Primary School got to experience the Alto recorder for the first time.
Everyone was eager to try the new instrument, but today, Ndalwentle and Lusenathi had the opportunity to take on the challenge and learn something new.

The highlight of the session was hearing the beautiful harmonies come together as the three types of recorders (soprano, alto and tenor ) played in harmony.

Siyakha Savings group from Bingqala.

The Sinako team visited the Siyakha group in Bingqala, where Phumla Mtsolo, one of the members shares how the Savings group has helped her.

"We are the Siyakha group from Bingqala, our group is formed of six members all from Bingqala. The savings was introduced to us by Cynthia (Ubunye Foundation staff). When Cynthia came with this idea we were already struggling financially but we believed and hoped that it will work out, before the introduction of the savings we were not doing anything, we were not working we were depended on social grant.

I remember the first time we did the share out in December, I was able to buy my house kitchen cupboards, Christmas clothes for my children and food. After that, we have never looked back as a group. Last year the new savings was introduced, and this year when we received our matching fund, as a group, we bought 50 chicken broilers and feedings. We only bought 50 because this was our first time doing this business so we needed to see if it will work and it has been working well, all 50 chickens are still alive and we will be adding 50 more chickens."

Music lessons at Fort Brown Primary continues. The learners are continuing with their ensemble pieces for the end year concert.10 of 4 leaners will be performing for the first time.

During Thursday's lesson, the learners worked on the Conventry carol and Sarabande. These two beautiful pieces will be part of the many songs that will be played.
One of the new Musicians, Zimbali shared "I am very excited to be finally part of the people that will be performing, last year i was not part of the programme but i really wanted to learn how to read and play music, I am excited and can not wait for my parents to watch me play."

Last year’s concert was a huge success, bringing the community together to celebrate the learners’ achievements. A group of local women also joined in the festivities with beautiful singing and dancing while proudly wearing their traditional attire.

As preparations continue, we look forward to another special day filled with music, talent, culture and community spirit. We cannot wait to see our young musicians take the stage and share what they have been learning.

Play Based Learning Training.

The practitioners from Upper fish (Gcinisa and Mthathi surroundings completed their session 7 of PBL. This session is on Developing stimulating learning areas, covering the topics of how they create a stimulating learning environment, the value of recycled safe and clean materials as well as ways to encourage children's curiosity.

Practitioners also share with each other ideas and how they deal with different situations. These sessions also help the practitioners with understanding different behaviors and characters in the classrooms.

A successful day at Fort Brown Primary.

Today, the Fort Brown community celebrated with the learners at the reading competition. The event was a huge success, with 11 learners from grade 3-6 participating and an award ceremony held after the competition, where the winning learners received their book vouchers. Everyone & all learners had fun. During the interval, the leaeners show cased their talents, singing and dancing.

The event was graced with the presence of the parents and Fort brown SAPS.
