21 June - the shortest day and longest night! It was unusually warm this morning for the Polar Plunge this morning. The event took place at the St Andrew's Prep pool, as we were avoiding the risk of the Grey Dam road and dam wall. As always, there was an excited group of people who were prepared to jump into icy water to celebrate the Winter Solstice! Thank you to Prep for the venue, Round Table to teaming up with the Rotary Club of Grahamstown Sunset to collect warm clothes and blankets to be distributed to needy families, and to the amazing PG Glass and Tim Dold for supplying hot chocolate to the swimmers. Homemade rusks supplied by The Salem Saunterer, Jack McLeod, and chocolates for the dads for Father's Day from the Rotary Club of Grahamstown Sunset - thank you!.

And as always, we were led "into the light" by event founder, George Euvrard whose enthusiasm every year is so inspiring!

Thanks everyone!! See you all next year - hopefully back at Grey Dam!!

Please note the change of venue for the Polar Plunge this year. We are sorry to move the event, but as you will see, it is for good reason. And we promise that the water in the pool will be as cold as the dam!

As winter settles in, many in our community are feeling the cold! This season, we have an opportunity to turn concern into action.

Rotary Club of Grahamstown Sunset and Grahamstown Round Table 11 are joining forces for the Winter Knights clothing collection (20th May - 20th June) and the Polar Plunge solstice swim at Grey Dam on the 21st June.

We’re calling on our community to dig deep: clean out those cupboards, gather warm clothing, blankets, and winter essentials, and help us extend a hand where it matters.

You can drop off gently worn clothes at any one of our collection points around town. Entry into the Polar Plunge requires a donation of a blanket or second hand clothing.

All the donated clothing and blankets will be directed for distribution through Child Welfare and Joza SAPS.

Let’s show what Makhanda can do when it stands together to make the greatest 'col(dl)aboration'!

The Rotary Club of Grahamstown Sunset extends its sincere gratitude to the Makana Fire Department, Frontier Fire Assist, farmers, community members, and all volunteers involved in battling the fire on Mountain Drive today. The conditions were incredibly tough with gale force winds, rapidly changing fire fronts, and challenging accessibility across Mountain Drive towards Stones Hill and down Featherstone Kloof towards the Southwell road.
Thank you to every individual who gave their time, skills, equipment, and support during this demanding operation. We are grateful for the long hours, teamwork, and selfless hard work shown by so many in their efforts to protect the mountain. Those who support For the Love of the Mountain(FLOM) appreciate your dedication.

IMPORTANT NEWS! The GBS Mountain Drive Half Marathon will have a new venue for 2026. Please note that the race start and finish will take place from the Wyvern Club at Kingswood College this year. The route will remain much the same, with just the starting and finishing points from the new venue. This has been occasioned by a date mix-up, and we will be back at Graeme College next year. Thank you to the Wyvern and Kingswood for welcoming us so warmly for the 2026 race! We're looking forward to see you all here to 'Conquer the Mountain'!!

09/04/2026

To all our lovely Mountain Drive Half Marathon runners - please would you note the change in the date of the event from 8th to 15th August. We apologise for this - it is a long story, and most of you would have had the 15th diarized from the EPA calendar anyway. So.....we hope that we will see you all here to conquer the Mountain on 15 August!! New runners and experienced Mountain lovers!
