R.A.D focuses mainly on outreach work in poorer communities and facilitating sterilisation of domestic animals in Botriver and Grabouw in the Theewaterskloof municipality, Western Cape. To date we have sterilised over 5 000 domestic animals via monthly spay days and sterilisations at our vet. We also assist the community with subsidised veterinary care, which includes operations such as leg amputa
tions, broken legs, eye operations, blood transfusions in the case of Biliary and general health care. We also have a dipping schedule for dogs who suffer from mange and have successfully treated numerous dogs afflicted by this condition
Our focus remains responsible pet ownership, where sterilisation is a prerequisite for subsidised treatment and assistance
Our aim is to maintain a constant presence in Botriver and Grabouw, following up on patients, making lists for sterilisations, assisting with information on animal care and keeping an eye on the pets in our communities. We also assist families with unchaining dogs by either setting up running lines, or fencing the property. We deliver on average 80 kennels every year which are donated by our supporters. Our basic policies pertaining to fieldwork:
- We try to keep the pet in the home. Each injury/accident will be a unique situation,
and if we feel the pet will be safe, we will rather sterilise, treat, and assist with
education, securing the property, assisting with convalescence and supporting the
family
- We do not assist with medical treatment if sterilisation is refused, however we will
transport the pet to the vet.
- All the pets on the property must be sterilised to make use of our service. Even though it is a constant struggle, we do feel proud that we can offer the same medical treatment to pets that private clients get. Our vet is also an excellent orthopaedic surgeon, and we have done some amazing operations and wound treatments. Although having a small clinic would be nice, the petty crime and vandalism in Grabouw is out of control, and there is nowhere that a clinic would be safe without constant security. Biggest needs:
- Financial support especially for sterilisations
- A 2nd vehicle: One bakkie is not enough to work in two towns, sterilise, transport
patients, deliver kennels and building materials, as well as doing collections for the
charity shop.
- Kennels
- Donations for your charity shop
- Foster homes within the Helderberg/Overberg area. We have a small charity shop in Botriver and our main income, our charity shop in Grabouw:
