I thought I would provide an update of where we are on 1000 Kays of Caring.
The good news is that we are on the last stretch having completed 19 days and gone through the 900km mark today (at this point sitting on a total of 940km). Whilst sometimes it may appear on social media that we are having fun, if you ask different parts of the body you will get different answers. Each of us have never come close to running this distance so every single one is now carrying a myriad of injuries and the pace is certainly not going to see us getting a call up into any running squad, anytime soon. But ask the eyes and you would get a positive response of seeing some of the most incredible parts of this country. We caught both the groot and klein karoos at the wettest I have ever seen them. A green karoo with a wide range of flowers and abundant wildlife. We hit the garden route in glorious sunshine. We encountered some of the best sunrises and sunsets one can imagine. And to throw a spanner in the works we have also dealt with some atrocious weather over the last few days.
So as I type this email we have just 2 days left to run. Tomorrow, day 20 is our last long distance day of 50km and that will put us just below the mountains of Grabouw. The final day on Friday is a “short” 36km. Now we describe it as short but it will still take some time to complete – but fortunately we have plenty of time on that last day with us scheduled to finish at Siphila Sonke at 3pm.
At this stage we are still short of the R350k target but we are confident that we will get close if we manage to collect the various pledges that were made. These funds will all make a massive difference to the sustainability of Siphila Sonke. I have mentioned it on a few of the videos that currently NGOs have very limited support from the government structures like National Lottery and the Department of Social Development. Charities are at the mercy of these current structures and it is through the support of the likes of you that they are able to survive, and continue to make their incredible difference to their communities ❤️ Thank You to all!
