The Graaff-Reinet SPCA was founded in 1968. All the SPCAs in South Africa are governed by the SPCA Act 169 of 1993 which is administered by the National Council of SPCAs, thus constituting us as a statutory body.

Inspectors are authorised in terms of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962 and the Performing Animals Protection Act 24 of 1935, with the NSPCA and the SPCAs undertaking over 99% of all animal welfare investigations and prosecutions.

The SPCA is managed by a Management Committee elected by the members at an Annual General Meeting. These members ensure good governance and that the SPCA performs its main functions of education and preventing cruelty.

The Committee at present:

Chairperson - John Biggs
Vice Chairperson - Wessel Landman
Treasurer - Ann Davison
Secretary - Alison Steven-Jennings
