When Graham Howes’ family experienced the devastating loss of someone they loved, the NSRI’s efforts to find him left a lasting impression.

Now, that connection is helping create something that will carry Graham’s name forward.

Spirit of Graham Howes, a Gemini 5.5-metre rescue RIB being built for Station 16 Strandfontein, is expected to join the NSRI fleet later this year.

For a family whose lives were so closely connected to the ocean, it is a meaningful way to honour Graham’s memory: a rescue craft that will head out onto the water with a purpose, helping bring others safely home.

NSRI Richards Bay volunteer crew assisted two foreign sailing yachts over Sunday and Monday. A British couple needed help getting their yacht across a shallow channel to the Zululand Yacht Club in strong winds, and a New Zealand couple were towed to safe moorings after their yacht’s motor failed in the harbour channel. Both crews and their yachts reached safety without incident.

Twenty-four people. Ten countries. One shared goal: preventing drowning.

In September, lifesaving leaders from around the world came together at NSRI headquarters in Cape Town for the RNLI’s Leaders in Lifesaving course, co-hosted with the NSRI for the first time.

The week brought together organisations facing different challenges, but many of the same questions: how can we strengthen leadership, share knowledge and find better ways to prevent drowning?

Because the work to save lives does not stop at borders.

Eight years ago, *Alick Rennie* became the first of a new generation of Offshore Rescue Craft to join the NSRI fleet.

Today, eight ORCs have been built, with the programme now complete.

The journey represents a significant investment in the future of maritime rescue, giving NSRI crews vessels designed to travel further offshore, operate in challenging conditions, and support increasingly demanding rescue operations.

From the first vessel to the last, the programme has built the capability needed to serve South Africa’s waters for decades to come.

STATION 9 – OCEAN COMMUNITY APPEAL

Following the tragic incident at Strand Beach on the 2nd of September, one person remains missing and the search operation continues.

Station 9 would ask all our friends, partners and the wider network of ocean-goers to please keep a lookout while out on the water or along the beaches of False Bay.

If you are surfing, paddling, boating, fishing, swimming, walking the beach or simply enjoying the ocean, please keep your eyes open for anything that may assist the ongoing search.

If you see anything that you believe may be relevant, please do not approach or attempt a recovery yourself. Take note of the location and contact the emergency services or NSRI so that the appropriate resources can respond.

Our thoughts remain with the families, friends and colleagues of those involved in this tragic incident.

Please keep a lookout and stay safe on the water.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NSRI – STATION 9, Gordons Bay

NSRI – Strand – Tuesday, 22 September. A Good Samaritan rescues a swimmer in distress:

At 15h28, Monday, 21 September, the NSRI Gordons Bay duty crew was activated by the NSRI EOC following reports of a swimmer caught in rip currents at Strand Beach. NSRI rescue swimmers responded directly to the scene, while the Gordons Bay crew prepared to launch a rescue craft from the Strand Beach auxiliary station.

Multiple agencies were activated, including the CoCT water rescue network, SA Police Service, WC Government Health EMS, Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service, GB Med Sec ambulance service, and CoCT Law Enforcement.

While responding, crews observed a Good Samaritan on a surf-ski who had reached the casualty. He was using the craft for flotation, securing the casualty to it, and swimming them both toward the shore. As they neared the shoreline, an unidentified man waded into the water to assist. An arriving NSRI rescue swimmer then launched into the surf to help bring the casualty safely to the beach.

The NSRI Gordons Bay quad rescue bike arrived with medical gear, and NSRI crew joined GB Med Sec paramedics in treating the patient for serious non-fatal drowning symptoms. The patient—a 26-year-old male from Strand—was transported to the hospital in a serious but stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.

The Good Samaritan was identified as Johan Otto, a local commercial airline pilot. He had just finished a paddle when he noticed bystanders gesturing toward a man being swept out to sea and slipping underwater. Johan launched his surf-ski and reached the exhausted man about 50 meters offshore in strong rip currents. When the casualty kept losing his grip on the ski, Johan dismounted, secured the man's hands in the foot straps, and swam them both toward the shore. Acknowledging his own fatigue from the strong currents, Johan called out to the unidentified bystander for help just as emergency services and the NSRI rescue swimmer arrived to assist them ashore.

NSRI commends Johan Otto, whose efforts undoubtedly saved the man's life, and extends its appreciation to the GB Med Sec paramedics for their vital medical assistance on the scene.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NSRI – STATION 9, Gordons Bay
NSRI – STRAND – Thursday, 3 September: 2 men missing in the surf zone at Strand Beach

Police divers from Water Policing and Diving Services (WPDS) are continuing search efforts at Strand Beach, Cape Town, for two local men who disappeared in the surf zone after being swept out by rip currents.

At 13h43 on Wednesday, 2 September, NSRI Gordons Bay was activated following an eyewitness report (relayed by an NSRI relative at a local coffee shop) of a drowning near the Helderberg Marine Protected Area (Lourens River). NSRI swimmers responded immediately, launching rescue craft Zelda from the Strand satellite station and Spirit of Surfski from the Gordons Bay Station 9 base.

A multi-agency response was mobilized, including SAPS, WPDS, GB Med Sec ambulance, WC Government Health EMS (ambulance, rescue squad, and drone unit), Cape Town Fire and Rescue, CoCT Law Enforcement and Marine Unit, the CoCT water rescue network, and the EMS/AMS Skymed helicopter.

The incident occurred when colleagues from a local business visited the beach on a day off. One local man experienced difficulty in the water. An unidentified local surfer rescued this initial man, who was cleared by paramedics on the scene requiring no further care. However, two of his colleagues—a 22-year-old male from Belhar and a 39-year-old male from Mfuleni, Blue Downs—were caught in rip currents while attempting to assist him and disappeared.

Despite an extensive air, sea, and shoreline search utilizing NSRI craft, Skymed aerial support, and WPDS free divers, there is no sign of the two missing men.

WPDS search efforts continue, and police have opened an investigation. Our thoughts and care are with the families, friends, and colleagues of the missing men.
