This association is open to ALL Gonubie residents, whether you rent or own. Meetings held every second Tuesday of the month 7pm at the Gonubie Bowling Club.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported me over the past five years during my tenure as chairman of the Gonubie Ratepayers and Civic Association. Last night marked my final meeting in this role, and I have officially stepped down to make room for fresh leadership to continue making a difference.
To the dedicated executive members who served alongside me, I owe a massive debt of gratitude. Together, we achieved incredible milestones and consistently held BCMM accountable on critical service delivery issues.
I am one hundred percent confident that the newly elected team, under the capable leadership of Elna Smit, will take the association to even greater heights. Elna has made it clear that her primary focus will be keeping BCMM strictly accountable to its core mandate. Furthermore, she will place a massive focus on environmental issues. Given her extensive background as a former environmental prosecutor for many years, I believe local municipal officials are in for a very tough time if they fail to meet their legal and environmental obligations. Supported by an excellent team—including dynamic younger members bursting with energy and commitment—our civic and environmental interests are in safe hands.
While it has been an absolute privilege to serve our community from the outside, I have realized that the time has come to fight for Gonubie from the inside. Therefore, I have decided to officially step into the political arena.
My goal is to bring the extensive civic governance experience I have gained over the last five years, combined with my real-world perspective as a local business owner and a qualified electrician, straight to the council. I know exactly how municipal infrastructure should work, I understand the frustrations of business owners dealing with red tape, and I am ready to apply that practical, hands-on knowledge to fix our metro.
May the Gonubie Ratepayers and Civic Association continue to grow in numbers, and may we never stop demanding transparency and accountability from BCMM officials. Thank you for your trust, Gonubie—the work continues!"

With regards to the tent that is currently erected in the public parking area at the Gonubie Main Beach, I have some questions for BCMM

The Mandatory Approval Process & Protocol

For any entity (even a municipal department organizing a functional layout) to host a public gathering or set up an event space, the law requires them to complete the official BCMM Events Management Protocol weeks in advance:
• Written Application & Fee: An organizer must submit a formal BCMM Service Application for Public Open Spaces specifying the date, expected attendance, equipment usage, and layout blueprint. A calculated tariff fee must be paid up front.
• Joint Operations Committee (JOC) Clearance: The request must pass reviews by multiple municipal bodies, including BCMM Traffic Services, Disaster Management, Fire Safety, and Environmental Health.
• Indemnity & Damage Deposit: Organizers must sign an indemnity form and provide a refundable deposit. If any physical damage occurs to the surrounding property (such as pierced tar), the city uses this deposit to fund the subsequent infrastructure repairs.

🔍 Who Gave Permission?

If local residents and the Ward Councillor were completely unaware of this event, it indicates a breakdown in communication or a clear bypass of municipal protocols. To trace the responsible party:
1. Check with the Ward Councillor: The primary step is to report the damage directly to the office of Ward 29 Councillor Valerie Dawn Knoetze so she can formally request the event's JOC permit file and reference numbers from council administration.
2. Demand the On-Site Permit: The site manager or event contractor is legally obligated to keep their approved municipal application paperwork and signed permit layout on-site at all times during construction. You have the right to request to see it.
3. File an Infrastructure Damage Report: Take photographs of the steel pins driven into the tar and submit them to the BCMM Engineering and Infrastructure Department to ensure the cost of repairing the asphalt is formally billed to the event organizer.

The job continued this past Friday. A big shout out to AgriLand SSK East London for donating 30 x 1.4 m wooden dropper poles, and to each volunteer who sacrificed their morning to install them.

A special mention to Ian Field for preparing every single pole by hand in advance of installation!

And as always, Shelly's Coffee & Craft kept our volunteers caffeinated and in good spirits.

𝗕𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗿𝘀 - 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗮 𝗗𝗮𝘆

Ahead of Mandela Day tomorrow, a small group of Ratepayers got hands-on and replaced the first section of missing poles along our boardwalk. These widening gaps have been a increasing safety concern for the walkers, joggers, and families who use it daily.

Today I attended the public hearing concerning the proposed name changes. I spoke specifically about Gonubie and that we oppose the suggested change. The meeting was conducted in Xhosa that made it very difficult to follow the proceedings. It is my view that this is not public participation if a section of the community cannot follow what is said by the facilitators.
