Ntataise Director, Puleng Motsoeneng, shared her hopes for the ECD sector for this year. She would like:
· for all ECD programmes to stay open regardless of whether we experience another Covid outbreak. The lockdowns over the past two years meant that trained, competent, experienced and skilled teachers and managers were lost to the sector.
· for the unemployment stimulus package relief fund from government to be paid out urgently. People have been waiting for over a year for these funds.
· for the ECD function shift from DSD to DBE to proceed smoothly with no threats to the sector and that it adds value.
· for DBE to implement and fund their ECD model at district, provincial and nation levels.
· for the play-based model to be implemented with understanding by all DBE officials and if there is training needed for these officials, that ECD training providers be given the opportunity. Training should include a module on how young children develop and learn.
· The implementation of collaboration and working together with all relevant Government Departments eg DBE, DSD, DoH, Local Government with NGO’s, Centres, parents and business incorporate.
· DBE to subcontract the ECD training providers to conduct training, monitoring and evaluation of the ECD programmes to ensure quality early learning programmes for all young children.
· The DBE to recognise existing programmes and resources developed over decades by ECD training providers to avoid duplication and waste of funds.
· DBE to support the training costs of the practitioners who need training.
