Community Wellness Project NPO Creating Healthier Communities

29/05/2026

Community Wellness Project successfully completed the Healthy LifeSTYLES Program with the final two Grade 8 classes at Parkdene Secondary School on Tuesday, 26 May and Thursday, 28 May.

During these sessions, learners were empowered through important discussions on prevention and awareness of HIV, TB and STI’s, while also exploring the impact that our choices can have on our futures. We spoke about the importance of positive role models and how factors such as Society, Boredom, Rebelliousness, Low Self-Esteem, Difficult Circumstances and Peer Pressure can influence the decisions young people make every day.

The learners also participated in meaningful conversations about Healthy Relationships, what Healthy Choices look like, and the importance of delaying sexual debut for as long as possible or until marriage.

It was encouraging to see learners actively engaging throughout the program, asking questions and sharing their thoughts openly. One learner was especially brave enough to share with us what the program meant to him personally and how it encouraged him to think differently about his future and the choices he makes. Moments like these remind us why these programs are so important in our schools and communities.

We would like to thank Parkdene Secondary School, the educators and all the learners for their warm welcome, participation and openness throughout the sessions. Together, we continue working towards healthier, stronger and more empowered communities.

Today marked the final day of our Gender Based Violence First Responder Workshop, and what an empowering and impactful journey it has been.

We started the day with a recap of yesterday’s learning before moving into important discussions around the different forms and levels of justice, referral pathways, and how to respond to Gender Based Violence using the World Health Organisation’s LIVES Approach.

Participants then took part in community mapping activities where they identified important resources, support services, and shelters available within their respective communities. This was followed by interactive role-plays based on different GBV scenarios and interventions, giving participants practical skills and confidence in responding to real-life situations.

Our final role-play focused on Survivor Disclosure, where participants practiced applying the LIVES Approach in a safe, supportive, and survivor-centred way.

We are incredibly proud of every participant for their openness, engagement, and commitment throughout the workshop. Together, we continue building safer communities and becoming stronger voices against Gender Based Violence.

A very special thank you goes to Fishalicious for sponsoring lunch for our participants, and to New York Corner for spoiling each participant with a chocolate and something to drink. Your generosity and support are truly appreciated.

Day 2 of the Gender Based Violence First Responder Workshop was another powerful and thought-provoking day filled with meaningful discussions, reflection and learning.

We started the day by recapping the important topics covered on Day 1 before diving deeper into discussions around Power, Gender Roles and Control, Gender Roles and Expectations, Power and Control in GBV, and Traditional Gender Roles.

Participants actively engaged in group discussions on Power Mapping, identifying who holds power within the Home, School, Workplace and Community, how power is expressed in these spaces and how power can be shared more equally to create safer and healthier environments for all.

The workshop also explored Human Rights & GBV, including the Human Rights Framework, Local and International Laws, and the Rights of Survivors. Participants gained valuable insight into the importance of protecting and promoting the dignity and rights of those affected by violence.

We further unpacked Gender Norms and Stereotypes, discussing what they are and sharing real-life examples of how they continue to shape society and contribute to inequality and violence.

The day ended with important conversations around Prevention and Intervention Strategies, including the Levels of Prevention, Effective Intervention Strategies, Referral Pathways and the importance of using a Survivor-Centred Approach when supporting survivors of Gender Based Violence.

Thank you to all participants for your passion, openness and willingness to learn and grow together. Every conversation brings us one step closer to building safer communities free from violence. 💜

A special thank you to Romans Pizza for sponsoring participants lunch and cooldrinks, we appreciate you.

What an incredibly exciting and impactful first day of our 3-Day Gender Based Violence First Responder Workshop! 🙌💜

Today was filled with meaningful discussions, learning, reflection, and teamwork as participants engaged deeply with the realities of Gender Based Violence and the important role First Responders play in supporting survivors and creating safer communities.

Throughout the day we covered:
✔️ The definition of Gender Based Violence
✔️ The different types of GBV
✔️ The root causes of GBV and why understanding them matters
✔️ Local and global GBV statistics and the harsh realities faced by communities worldwide

Participants also took part in interactive group discussions where they explored what the word “violence” means to them personally and within society. The energy and honesty in these conversations created a powerful space for learning and growth.

One of the highlights of the day was the role play activities where groups demonstrated different GBV scenarios, helping everyone better understand the emotional, social, and practical realities survivors often face.
Participants also worked together on GBV Impact Mapping, identifying how violence affects individuals, families, communities, workplaces, and the country as a whole before presenting their findings to the rest of the group.

We are truly inspired by the passion, participation, and commitment shown by every attendee today. This is how change begins — through education, awareness, courageous conversations, and communities standing together against violence. 💜

We are looking forward to the next two days of empowerment, learning, and equipping First Responders with the knowledge and tools needed to make a difference.

A special thank you to George for sponsoring the lunch for today
